I just had my surgery on the 30th. The gas pain is unreal

Hello,

I had a lot of gas. What helped me with the gas was walking.

God bless,

Brandi

I had my gastric bypass surgery on 5/20. I have so much Water retention! I'm up 20lbs from my pre-op weight, thighs and hips have gained several inches. I almost took one of my old diuretic pills until I read a thread on here. Anyone else having tons of edema?

Yup...gaining Water weight every day! Super depressing looking at that stupid scale. I used to have a diuretics everyday...now Dr. says no more diuretics. Don't have a clue what to do next. It is impossible to gain real weight eating between 500 & 600 calories/day.

I had my sleeve in 31/5, woke up feeling terrible wanting to vomit, pee, cry and hiccup at the same time. Loaded me up with morphine. Surgeon came said all my fat was in the abdomen made keeping the ports in difficult so I would be extra sore.

Now day 3 post op. Gas pain still there and terrible and abdominal pain is crap. Don’t want to sit or stand or lay flat. Very dehydrated. Just wish I wasn’t so dehydrated

Did anyone also have issues breathing after the bypass I am 4 days post op and I still need to practice breathing. Usually after I walk or if I am getting up from laying down.

Have you tried a heating pad? Usually if the gas pain is in the back a heating pad will help if the gas pain along with walking if it is in the chest area walking is good. If you are trying to lay down have you tried your side at an angle with extra pillows for support? Also for dehydration Water is key but I have also been using the Gatorade zero which gives a little boost of energy.

Oh wow, Yes! It was terrible. I had to set a timer to use that spirometer every hour. I also leaned heavily on the breathing exercises on my fitbit and anxiety app. It was probably around 12-14 days before I really felt like I was breathing normally again.

Hi everyone my name is kaitlin! I am a semi driver I'm on medical leave currently because of a hernia. In order to get it fixed I have to get to 150 pounds. I dropped 60 pounds on my own out on the road before this happened. So when i got taken out of the saddle in September I took the pledge and plunge I ended up going through the process for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass which I had on May 14th 2024. My highest documented weight was 420. But my starting weight before surgery was 389. My day of surgery weight was 364 and I'm sitting at 341 now!!! I'm on soft food stage.

I had my surgery on 5/31. I’m knee deep in the liquid stage and I don’t feel like I’m going to make it the whole time on liquids. I only stay full on the liquids for a short while and I’m already so sick of the Protein Shakes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have felt like this after my surgery. I know it’s rough, power through. Try mixers like sugar free lemonade/gatorade, you can get them at the grocery store assuming you are in the states. That helped me get through the liquid stage.

Try different shakes! Also is it only shakes you can have? Or are you allowed other liquids

I did Bone Broth, Tomato Soup with Protein Powder, every flavor of sugar free drink mix and shakes. As long as i got enough Protein and the recommended calories i felt good. I loved sugar free peach tea to help get the fluids in….. sip sip sip. For the first two weeks my surgeon included the shakes as prt of my 64 oz goal.

I retained Water for about a week or two. Felt like i had to pee every 20 minutes. I started drinking plain water between shakes/soup to decrease the sodium. I also found staying hydrated i stopped having to get up so much in the middle of the night now! Hang in there.

Hello Everyone! I'm a little late to the party, and remiss I didn't find this thread when I went looking over a month ago. I had RNY on May 31st, and went back with a blockage less than a week later. After two more nights in the hospital, I seem to be doing well again.

I haven't read all the posts in this thread, but plan to asap. Thank you for being here!

30 days post op! I still have two incisions that we are fighting to heal. Down 15 lbs from surgery day!
Today i had my first experience with dumping syndrome. I was visiting my mom and did not have one of my shakes for lunch, so she gave me an Equate nutritional shake with Protein. 60 minutes later I was miserable. I know i don’t wish to repeat that!! It was literally the only outlier. Had my normal shake for Breakfast. Now I’m just drinking Water because i want to be sure its over.

Hi Calli,

I’m 2 weeks post op and same here two wounds refuse to heal and one behave infected. So I am not on Antibiotics and ointment.

Surgeon said they will need to close by secondary intention, so will need dressing and salt baths. Pretty annoying.

However I have lost 17 kg so far including the pre op diet

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
