I was told by a RN not to use Metamucil after Gastric Sleeve Surgery but to use Miralax instead. One week after surgery because of Constipation I took a half dose of Miralax. MISTAKE...... I spent 3days either on the toilet or wearing pads to keep from leaking. Now I see in this forum that I could have taken my usual daily Metamucil.

The nurses at the hospital were so anxious for me to poop - they gave me full strength Miralax after I drank a bottle of something to check for leaks ( which was ALSO a laxative ) I spent 2 weeks in adult diapers and finally I took immodium to stop the volcano eruptions. That was the worst 2 weeks of my life !

I certainly feel for you, just 3 days was all I could stand. That was last week and my back still hasn't recovered from hours on the toilet and cleaning up messes. Immodium helped me also.

It evidently affects people differently. I take a capful every morning and have for almost nine years - fortunately, it never had that effect on me.

P.S. she may have told you not to take Metamucil because she thought you were too clogged up. If you take Fiber supplements when you already have a huge clog, it sometimes just adds to the clog. Once you're "unclogged", a fiber supplement can keep you from clogging up again.

I take 3g a day in the morning with my coffee to keep me regular with no side effects. I think half a dose is about 8.5g. Either way, glad you are feeling better now. Sitting on the toilet all day is no fun! Miralax does works miracles for me, and it's inexpensive, safe for long term so I can see why she recommended it. I was also told not to take Metamucil or any psyllium husk for a few months because it swells in your stomach, adding bulk and our tummies are so tiny already.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
