How many 2 oz. purees per day?

Recommended Posts

I'm currently almost 3 weeks post op and am on 2 oz servings of purees, but I don't know how many per day. I find that I'm not very hungry during the day but by around 7pm, I am hungry. By that time I've already had a "breakfast" puree and a "lunch" puree and will have "dinner" but after that, I am just hungry. Continuing to meet my fluid goals with Water and Jello don't really do anything to help. I feel like I need more substance but I am unsure how many servings of 2 oz purees in a day I should be consuming.

Wow 3 weeks post op and only 2oz?

I would contact your clinic and see if they have any recommended plan. Did they tell you how many meals a day?

For my program they told me to have 3 meals a day. I use my shakes as Snacks. My meals at 3 weeks post op is 5oz tho. 3oz pf Protein, 1oz puree vegetable and 1oz of starch. I can’t finish all, but I would stop and go back to it.

I was told to have 4-6 meals a day. Including Snacks. Every 3-4 hours apart. Also was told to start aiming for more at a time to while eating. Like 4-6 oz. But I would reach out to your team because every program is different.

Like others above, check with your team. I was to aim for 20 macros of Protein for each of three meals. I couldn’t do it but that was the goal. I ended up 20 for Breakfast, 10 lunch, 10 around 3pm, 10 around 5ish, and 10 in the evening one hour before bed. In my efforts to curb nighttime snacking habits, I started then (and still maintain now) 50% or more of my daily food should be consumed by lunchtime. It makes me go to sleep earlier and wake up refreshed, and mostly banished the nighttime munchies. Obviously this won’t work for everyone. I was never a morning person, nor a breakfast eater before surgery. You’re doing great, keep up the good work!

2oz is equivalent to 1/4 cup of purée. My plan was 1/4 - 1/3 cup (2-3ozs), three times a day from purée so pretty much like your plan. Honestly I couldn’t eat any more than that but I was a no hunger & no appetite person.

Sometime around purées I added a high Protein yoghurt or yoghurt drink as a snack to boost my protein intake. But check with your dietician, maybe you can add a high protein yoghurt as a snack too. If you are experiencing real hunger. Never hurts to ask.

I was never given any specific goals to meet at any stage. At 3 weeks after my sleeve I was probably eating 3 tiny 2oz pureed things per day. If I was hungry I had a teaspoon or two of nut butter before bed, or if it was earlier in the day a few spoons of Greek yoghurt.

Just hit 3 weeks post-op today. I’m also on 2oz purée food to be SLOWLY eaten over 30 minutes. At this stage, Protein Shakes no longer count towards Water goal of 48-64oz. I have also still been hungry and felt like I needed more substance. Met with my surgeon yesterday and he said the hunger hormones are still adjusting in my body, and it may take a few more weeks to feel less hungry. Also, I know some of the hunger is mental. Some things that have helped me are to actually take 30 minutes to eat the 2oz- which is quite difficult for me to slow down that much. I also stick to 16oz of water slowly sipped until around 8am. Protein Shake slowly sipped 10am-12pm (I started adding a serving of collagen peptides to my morning Protein shake (my program says collagen peptides are not a complete source of nutrition, so should not be taken as a full meal)- this has put me at more calories and protein earlier in the day. lunch around 2pm, dinner around 5:30/6pm, another protein shake or 1oz purée a little later if needed. Goal is 60-75 grams of protein

I found routines around my eating really helpful too. Still follow them almost 5 years out but am more flexible now. And I also took a couple of hours to drink my shake. I added additional water to thin it out. This additional water can be added to your Fluid goal.

Bad news is collagen peptides aren’t considered a complete protein either & can’t be counted towards your protein goal. They don’t contain all the necessary amino acids.

To help to slow your eating down, have you tried just dipping your teaspoon into your purée so you’re not eating a full spoonful at each bite? Do you put the spoon down between bites or sit back from the table between bites? I used to play online games or read & only look to take another bite after each game or after reading a couple of pages. I live alone so I don’t have to chat to others while eating. LOL! If you do live with others use table conversations to pace your eating like a change of topic or speaker or wait for the speaker to finish what they’re saying. Actually it’s a great long term strategy I use when socialising. You really focus on their conversation & on who you are with.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
