I have to do a liquid diet tomorrow (day before surgery) and I am realizing I did not get everything I should for this 🤦‍♀️ anyways my surgeon said liquid diet, Protein Shakes are ok. That’s it. So can I have my Decaf coffee with milk, or yogurt? fruit or veggie smoothie? Jello?

I have broths, Gatorade zero, decaf coffee, Water but that’s it.

Did your doctor give you a list of what was tolerated on the liquid diet? I would just follow what was suggested for the liquid diet phase. Each doctor has their own plan specialized for their patients. I had gastric bypass and had to do a full one week of Protein, Water and Decaf tea. My friend who had the sleeve also did a full one week liquid diet but also was allowed one low cal meal.

I had the sleeve and had to do a week as well. I was also allowed one small meal a day except the last day. I was only allowed Protein Drinks and decaf/sugar free liquids, but no fruit juice.

He didn’t, that’s why I asked lol. But I only need to do a liquid diet today (day before pre-op)

So, I will be allowed Water, Decaf tea or coffee, sugar free flavoring, sugar free Jello and popsicles, broth, skim or 1% milk, yogurt without any pieces in it, unsweetened apple sauce, sugar free pudding, cream of Tomato Soup, and of course Protein supplements. I have to do this for 2 weeks. But I would call your office to make sure what they want you to do because they're all different.

As you can see asking on here about pre op diets are pointless. Everyone of us were given a different one. You need to clarify with your team asap

I concur with AmberFL, each surgeon has their own requirements. I was on liquid diet for 2 weeks pre-op and 3 weeks after... Hopefully your bariatric team gave you a diet plan for all phases but of your journey! Mine was no caffeine (no teas or coffees), Protein drinks, broths, sugar free Jello and of course all the Water I wanted! Oh joy!

I wasn't allowed yogurt or fruit and veggies in my smoothies during the liquid diet pre-op OR post-op! Every surgeon is different. You'll have to call and find out, or play it safe and stick to strict fluids only. Since it is the day before your surgery I'm assuming it is just to make sure your digestive tract is empty the day of surgery, so I'd doubly stay away from anything thick... Good luck with surgery!!

Do you have a nutritionist? If not i would look into one as they are the real experts on diet pre and post op.

So interesting as they only required you to be on it for only 1 day. Every program varies so much as you can plainly see from everyone's responses.

I had to do a 12 day preop diet. The first 10 days I could do 2 Protein Shakes and 1 lean Protein and non starchy veg. Black coffee, tea, sugar free beverages all ok. A snack of low sugar fruits - berries mainly - was allowed. The 11th day was liquids only, but could include Protein Shake, sugar free Jello, sugar free sodas, gatorade, broth. The last day was Clear Liquids only so no dairy at all (i did protein Water and broth). 8 hours prior to surgery, I was to drink 16 oz of regular sugar Gatorade - as it was supposed to assist in recovery. 🤷‍♀️

The main point typically of this diet is to shrink your liver to make it easier to move to get to your stomach.

I'm kind of shocked by the lack of details provided from your medical team. I had to do a whole Zoom meeting with the dietician and other patients having surgery done in the same window of time to discuss the entire pre and post op plan including the specific diet guidelines.

I only had to do 1 day liquid diet because I lost 35lbs before surgery at least that’s what he told me. I did have a dietitian meeting however the booklet they gave us is super confusing. I was able to clear it up with the dietitian and she helped me figure it out. I had surgery yesterday and it went well just this gas ugh

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
