March 2024 Surgery Buddies!

Recommended Posts

I can’t say the staples were a pain issue for me. There was generalized soreness in the abdomen but was medicated at the hospital. Once home I didn’t require too much pain meds. Just a couple days at night to help sleep. For me the sorest area was the larger incisional port where the Dr removed the stomach. He had told me I would feel a tugging sensation for a few weeks due to the additional stitches at that location. The pain wasn’t too bad, but, thankful I knew what it was. I don’t feel it anymore. As far as the nausea, I was given medication to prevent it so thankfully didn’t go through that. Hope this helps.

Checking in with the March 2023 crew. How y’all doin??

My surgery was 3/28. Things have been going relatively smoothly for me. My toughest time was my overnight in the hospital—the night nurse was a bit extreme and wouldn’t let us sleep. She wanted us drinking two ounces of Water every hour from 10pm to 4am with the threat that we wouldn’t go home if we didn’t complete it. Needless to say, I did not go home at 5am lol. I definitely told my surgeon at my 1wk check-in.

The first few days, it was painful trying to get up out of bed and if I sneezed, but I never needed to take the heavy duty pain meds they gave me. I did need to start adding Miralax to my water every few days and I use Benefiber daily.

Other than that, it’s been really smooth for me so far. Getting all my water is sometimes tough, but I try to start drinking it earlier and can handle it far better than I could right when I got home post-op. I can’t wait for coffee!

Hope you’re all recovering smoothly!!

I'm going to jump in here and say my insurance is making me go to (4) once a month primary doctor visits for nutritional counseling before I can move forward with Sleeve after my Band removal March 26th. Psych Eval next month so it won't be until end of July before surgery.

Doctor says no pain from staples but some people have nausea. My ex-port site was only pain from surgery, no gas.

Is he correct? Does anyone have pain inside at staples?

Hi Edward! I'm getting my lap band removed the same day I have gastric bypass. I'm ready to have this bulging port site gone. I didn't have any success with the band unfortunately, but insurance wouldn't just pay for removal. Best of luck!!

That's crazy that you had to drink from 10pm to 4am!! My surgery date is 4/30 and I'm already missing coffee 😂

My RNY gastric bypass surgery was at the blink of dawn on March 19th, 1 night in hospital afterwards. Two days of Clear Liquids at home before they approved the full liquid diet.

I feel like I'm doing mostly good?

Definitely chillier all the time -- I went from being someone who'd wear tank tops around the house in (Canadian) winter to being never without a sweater or throw blanket.

The full liquids, I don't hate it. My team gave me instructions to have a minimum of 1 Protein Shake a day, slowly moving up to 2. Beyond that, as long as I'm getting 60-80 g of Protein per day, they don't care if its whey Protein added to Soup, or greek yogurt, etc. I also caved and bought a couple protein Soup mixes / oatmeal from BP. Bacon and cheese instant soup was a life-saver those first few days. I had my first Tomato juice today, which I never used to be a fan of but it hits different after being on shakes for so long. (I was on these disgusting Medi Meal shakes for 2 weeks pre-op and haaaated every minute of them)

My last bandages came off today. Mildly grossed out but trying not to think about it. 😆

Bacon and cheese soup?? Tell me more 😂 I might need that in my life!

My surgery was March 27th getting ready to go into soft foods… kind nervous

Surgery twin! I found a lot of soft/pureed recipes on Pinterest and TikTok. My surgeon had me on a clear liquid diet post op for 3 days and then I was able to start soft/pureed. Soups and Jello were my go to initially. You got this! I’d say to wait a few minutes after your first bite to see how you handle it

I’m 18 days post-op and on purées and I am struggling with Protein intake. Protein Shakes are so hard to get down, the milkyness of them turns me off and I feel nauseous. I’ve tried premade and Protein Powder. I’ve not once met my daily protein goal because of it. 😩 Hopefully next week with soft foods and then regular foods the week after will help with that. Other than that I’m doing okay, which is good.

Hi! I am 17 days post op :) have you tried Protein Water? I’ve been drinking Protein20 + electrolytes- it’s like drinking flavored water (much thinner than the shakes) it only has 15 grams of protein so about half of most shakes - so you just have to drink more of them….which can only help you hit fluid goals too! Hope it helps…good luck!

I’ve had a hard time getting my protein in too. Started drinking protein Water (Protein2O, it has 15g of protein). Also bought Isopure tropical fruit protein power to add to my water (has 20g). I haven’t tried it yet but looking forward to it. Hope this helps.

Finally broken through my week 3 stall and it feels so good. I had zero weight lost for three weeks, from March 26 (2 weeks post VSG) until today. I didn't make any changes, just stuck to the program and waited it out.

Hopped on the scale today excited to see how much I’ve lost (4weeks post op) to discover the scale reads the same as last week. I’m taking in less than 500 calories per day & meeting Protein requirements.

Was thankful to read from others that this plateau is common around 3weeks. Trying to stay positive but this was 🥲

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
