Tamika James 61 Posted January 21, 2024 So I've finished everything except for my last two dietitian appointments but my bloodwork shows I'm anemic. Does anyone know if that will disqualify me from surgery?
Arabesque 7,414 Posted January 22, 2024 (edited) It will depend upon your surgeon. It may result in a delay depending upon how low your level & stores are. Has anyone gone through your blood work with you yet? They may require you to take some Iron tablets to boost your levels. If you are very low they may want you to have a transfusion. Give your surgeon/ team a call & ask if there is a need for concern & what you need to do to boost your levels. Fingers crossed it will be an easy fix & your surgery will proceed as planned. PS - Avoid drinking coffee or other caffeine drinks immediately before, during or after eating. Caffeine reduces your body’s ability to absorb iron by 40 - 60+%. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/coffee-caffeine-iron-absorption#TOC_TITLE_HDR_2 Edited January 22, 2024 by Arabesque
catwoman7 11,220 Posted January 22, 2024 like Arabesque said, it may delay it (even if that..), but it shouldn't disqualify you. I was very low on Vitamin D (as are many people, actually..), and they just had me take prescription Vitamin D until my level came back up to normal.
FifiLux 499 Posted January 22, 2024 I have pernicious anemia and it did not exclude me, I just had to make sure i had my B12 injection beforehand and started to take daily Vitamins for the month before surgery.
