My surgery is scheduled for February 7th. I go in on January 23rd for my pre-op appointment to meet with the surgery team and the dietitian once more before then.

Outward I'm fine, inside though, I'm freaking out haha. With this being the only major surgery I have had, I'm a literal ball of anxiety.

I do plan on addressing this at my pre-op appointment, but I just needed to get it out there. I can't see myself canceling the surgery or anything, I just need to be dramatic for a moment 🤣

I would imagine 90% of us felt the same way before our surgeries! Actually, I still do before surgeries even though I've had several. But that first one, especially, since you haven't been through one before. I'm sure it'll go fine for you, though!

I definitely understand. Mine will be two weeks after yours, and I also have my final meeting with the surgeon on Jan 23. It's a big step, and it's a good sign you're not taking it lightly. Is there anything specific that scares you, or just the whole situation? The only time I've ever had a surgery or anesthesia was when I had my wisdom teeth out. It's definitely a good cause for some nerves, but don't let yourself get freaked out!

I don't think it's anything specific...I'm worried about waking up during the procedure (which I know is super unlikely), and I'm definitely worried about the pain/discomfort after (which I know they will help me manage).

We all need to be a drama queen some times. 😉 But it’s pretty common & understandable that you might have some trepidation. As you said you’ve never had this surgery or any major surgery before. Fear of the unknown. Perfect opportunity for some drama & attention seeking - LOL!

Write down any questions you may think of & ask when you have your appointment next week. Hopefully that will help ease some of your nerves & clarify what you should/might expect.

All the best.

it's pretty rare to wake up during a surgery - that's one of the things the anesthesiologist (or nurse anesthetist) watches out for, and gives you more anesthesia if they notice anything like that. Also, I had virtually no pain after my surgery, and that's actually fairly common. Pain is definitely all across the board with this, but it seems like most of us have little to no pain after this surgery. And like you said, if you're one of the ones who DO experience pain, they'll manage it in the hospital as well as send you home with pain killers.

I was honest with my team, perhaps to a fault! Minutes before surgery, with IVs in both of my arms getting wheeled down the hallway, and even when that mask was going over my mouth and nose, they all knew how scared I was and how much I felt like I wanted to back out.

I'm SO glad that I did not chicken out. My life has changed for the better in every dimension of my existence. Sending you lots of hugs @Jessica Marie and hope you can see that you are not alone 😎

It's absolutely normal to be scared. I think lots of us will have delayed surgery for years precisely because of the fear of one thing or another. Eventually the fear of being fat and unhealthy for the rest of your life overtakes the (very healthy and normal) fear of the unknown and we take this big big step. It is a positive step for most people and I hope it is for you both too. Keep posting, we all want to help.

The benefits of WLS far outweigh the risks. I would be more afraid of doing nothing. You'll do just fine. 👍

I had more intensive pre-surgery tests done for this surgery than any other. They will make sure you are healthy going in and have an entire team who are dedicated to making sure you are healthy when you come out. Most of my "pain" was gas and after the day of surgery, the discomfort was more annoying than anything. Coughing was the worse. If you cough, press against the larger incision.

The worse part was actually the taste in my mouth in recovery, and they wouldn't give me Water to rince with. They said it was the anesthesia, but I don't remember it ever being like that. Maybe because they would usually let me drink.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
