Looking for friends in Alabama that have used Dr. Miles/Dr. Schmidtt

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I am in Alabama, I am at the end of my first month of the "medically supervised" diet :whoo: which is required for BCBS. I hope to have my lapband surgery in June or July. I have a consultation with Dr. Schmidtt at St. Vincents East(formerly Medical Center East). I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life :). I am looking for anyone who is in Alabama, anyone who is newly banded, anyone that is at the same stage as me or anyone that is willing to talk about their experiences :).

He was the second surgeon I choose (the first i won't comment on) but he has put me at ease and I will have my surgery in February. I am glad to see someone on here from Alabama.

I wish you well on your 6 month diet. it will be up before you know it!

Hi Melissa! Good luck to you as well! I am 2 1/2 months into my 6 month diet now. Beginning of the third month is Feb 4. I went for my consultation on Thursday Jan 17. I have to do the sleep study and the psych evaluation. My sister actually went for a consultation the same day, same doctor(we rode together). She doesn't have to do the psych evaluation. I was told that I have to do the psych eval because I currently take Paxil for depression. It kind of pisses me off that because I take anti depression meds I have to be evaluated to make sure I am "of sound mind" to make this decission but somebody who isn't on anti depression medication is automatically just assumed to be "of sound mind". But whatever-I will jump thru the hoops and get my band hopefully in June.

Hi fellow Alabama gals.

I've started my six month wait for BCBS this month too.

Will be keeping up with how you all are doing.

Hey I had my surgery last November by Dr. Miles, I went thru the same thing you are going thru now, last year. I went to Consultation in Jan 08 and finally jumped all the hoops and whatnot of BCBS and had surgery in November 2008. I can answer any questions you have and you go def go to the support group meetings they have monthly. It is nice to meet people that are going thru what you are going thru.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
