How should i arrange food and protein shake/BCAA

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

so i had gastric sleeve on 23/09/2023. my current routine is usually Protein Shake in the morning, breakfast/lunch around 12-1 PM, then i go to the gym for my workout and have my BCAA during/post workout, and then my dinner when i get home.

However, i got told by many people that i should actually keep my Protein shake for later on and not in the morning and instead just have Breakfast.

What do you guys usually do with arrangements of meals and protein shake and so on?

I agree. If it works for you it’s ok. Understanding what I eat & when I eat was an important learning for me. Learning & understanding what’s best for me isn’t necessarily what others do or recommend. If having a Protein Shake in the morning as your breakfast is fine if it works for you. Personally I’m an eat real food person & haven’t touched a shake since week 3 & started purées but that was what worked, & still does, for me.

We always say follow your plan, but if it doesn’t work for you, negotiate alternatives or substitutions with your team. As long as you meet those nutrient goals. (BTW BCAA isn’t a complete Protein & can’t be counted towards your protein goals. Fine to drink & count as a Fluid during or post your workout but not as a source of your protein.)

What & when you eat may change as you progress through your weightloss & learn more about nutrition, your body’s needs & what works best to support how you want to live & enjoy your life.

All the best.

I keep trying to eat in the morning because it's supposed to be better to spread the meals out over the day but I keep getting reminded why that doesn't work for me. I usually end up hungry again in 2 hours then need a nap, doesn't matter what I eat. I figure as long as I have the energy I need to fuel my day and continue losing weight, then I'm doing fine. I have gastroparesis and my stomach doesn't play nice in the morning and I usually have milk in my Decaf coffee but no solid food until after I do my work out. I think if you feel good and have the energy to do what you normally do then you're doing it right for you.

I know people who have a Protein Shake in the morning (mostly because they're not "breakfast eaters", but they can handle a shake). I see no problem with that. In fact, I remember one of the dietitians at our clinic telling us that if we can't stomach breakfast, just having a Protein shake then is fine. So you're good!

I had a running battle with my dietitian for 2 years about breakfast. To please her I actually tried multiple permutations. 2 years and 10 stones later and guess what? I re-discovered the fact that I don't like breakfast. I don't eat breakfast. Because I just don't do breakfast. 😂 Not everyone is the same. If your modified plan is working for you and your team is in broad agreement then I say stick to that. 🤩

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
