redness around port

Recommended Posts

I was banded on December 4th. All of my incisions look good except for the one with the port. It is still very red all around it. It is not that painful, and I do not have any fever or symptoms that I would consider infection, but I am concerned that the area is still so red. Anyone else having similar issues?

Eight days after my surgery, I went in for my first post-op appointment. My doctor said that I had a little redness around my port incision and that I should keep an eye on it. He said there was a dark red edge and a lighter red band and that if one or either band got wider, to call him. The next day, I noticed that the light red band looked wider. I called my doctor and he called in some antibiotics but I wasn't able to pick them up and start them until Monday evening. The incision was a little sore but I had no other symptoms. Within days of taking the antibiotics, however, it started looking better and the soreness went away.

It's probably a good idea to give your doctor a call, especially with the weekend and holidays upon us. Good luck!

I had my surgery on the 3rd of December - all was going well until 10 days afterwards and my portsite began to turn red and it appeared to have a seroma. then it began to drain. Had my surgery in Mexico and live in Virginia - no one wanted to touch me becuase my surgery was done outside of US - anyway - one doctor did see me - said it was infected and took a culture. I have been keeping in dry and washing with soap and Water at least three times a day. I am taking Augmentin for antibiotic. Go back to doctor tomorrow morning. It is draining a lot and while he does not know anything about Lap band, he said the band may need to come out. I have been iin contact with my doctor in Mexico and have found more support from him than anyone here. Go figure. He said he would see me and if it needed to be drained he would do it. It does not hurt, no fever, not hot to the touch but it is red and drains a clear Fluid -with no odor. I would definately encourage you to keep up with it. Tara Langston

I'm going to call my doctor in the morning and see if they will see me. I'm supposed to go in Thursday, but keep worrying about it. I hope they don't have to take yours out, Tara.

I would be very upset if they take mine out! I don't believe the band itself is bothering me, but the port. I wonder if they had to take the port out if they would fill the band first? I'd hate to know I went through all this for nothing!

hey, good news. I just came back from the dr. office. They were closed Monday, so today was the first day back. The dr. said it was red, and a little redder than normal, but it did not look infected, and my body is NOT rejecting my port (my fears!!!) but gave me a prescription for an antibiotic and I'm still on schedule for my first fill on Jan. 3rd. I will sleep MUCH BETTER tonight! thanks for all the advice and well wishes!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
