Sudden Onset Heartburn/Acid Reflux

Recommended Posts

I, 49 M, am over 2 years post RNY, and it has been a success story for the most part. Everything was going along fine, until just over a month ago, when all of a sudden I had severe reflux (first time since procedure), and it hasn't gone away. There's like a burning pain in my chest at times, feels like gas, right in the center at the point where the breastbone comes together. Had heart and lungs checked, and nothing abnormal was detected.

It's not by any means crippling, but it is concerning. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Thank you.

Have you been checked for an ulcer? Usually you can just take the meds for a few weeks and you will start to feel better. It does seem to be slow process though. Hope you figure it out and feel better soon.

Have they tested you for bile reflux? The treatment for this is a bit different and it is possible to have bile reflux after an RNY. Talk to your doctor about this, they will probably want to do some GI imaging or an endoscopy to figure out what is going on. There are meds that will work for this but you have to get the right diagnosis first. Good luck!!

Just an update to close this out... It was/still is costochondritis, with a case of bronchitis that never really went away confusing the issue. Bronchitis is hopefully gone. 🤞🏾 Chest is still in pain, but on the mend. To be clear, this was an inflammation of the cartilage between my ribs, and it felt like acid, lung pain, and heart attack all in one. I'd never heard of costochondritis before this. Thanks guys!

I imagine this is a very deep and painful experience and wish you full recovery!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
