Questions for pre surgery liquid diet

Recommended Posts

Found on Amazon, $35 for 4 Kettle & Fire Bone Broth soups; 2 chicken, and 2 beef. Cheapest thing I found to 'try' this. I was surprised on Kettle & Fire web site, to try a couple sing packages, cost you an extra $12 shipping, making that $14 per carton. Everything is so damn expensive these days!

Anyone else have ideas, what is tasty for you, prices and places to get other 'liquid diet' soups/food?

The sugar free popsicles that are pretty low calorie have saved me a few days in my liquid diet. I also like the Water flavoring packets (especially the jolly rancher ones because they are sour sweet) because I get tired of drinking plain water. I like to add coffee to some of my Protein Shakes to cut the sweetness, we aren't supposed to have caffeine on my plan so I've gotten Decaf, still does the job flavor wise. Tea helps too. And some people's plans allow for strained Soups, so you may want to check yours! I get tired of sugary tastes even if it is fake sugar.

Oh and I ordered my Kettle & Fire broth from Thrive Market (and turned off the autoship) because I could get them one at a time to see what I like. But in person at the store is probably easiest!

I went to Safeway and there was no Kettle & Fire at all. Not sure how I saw that on Safeway online but when I went there yesterday, right around the corner from me, they had none listed on their shelves. I'll have to look into that more.

So, since I was at Safeway, I did buy Pacific Foods Organic Bone Broth chicken. But it does not have nearly the amount of Protein that Kettle & Fire has in their Chicken Bone broth. So frustrating. It only has 9g of Protein where K/F has double the amount of protein I believe.

Yeah, it's expensive. That's why we often make our own. Honestly you may be better off just getting the Protein Soup from Unjury! They have chicken broth, beef and vegetable, and french onion. I ordered them all because I know me and I know they will be a good way to get a nice hit of protein in during the day when I'm wanting something savory. You can order sample packets from them to test them out before buying the big containers... Most people seem to like the chicken one!

How is the kettle and fire broth? I haven’t tried them.

It's pretty good! It has a stronger body than a simple broth, which makes it feel a bit heartier. The only thing I don't like is that often once you heat it there is a thin layer of oil on top, I'm assuming it's just from the broth itself, so I drink it but it feels funny for a moment. LOL Homemade is the same way though...

Commenting in case anyone stumbles upon this thread in the future, as I'm guessing OP may have already finished their liquid diet!

I've had good luck with ramen packets. Yes, the little powdered flavor packets that come basically welded to your 99 cent packets of cheap ol' ramen noodles. Definitely avoid these if you can't have much sodium 😂, but I was able to add Isopure unflavored Protein Powder to some boiled Water with the ramen flavor packet and it was pretty darn good! chicken and Soy have been my favorites so far. I didn't like the smell of the Beef flavor very much, but it tasted fine.

My program allows us one 8oz cup of V8 per day as well (...or 3 dill pickles...so random, but love those electrolytes!), so I heated that up and mixed in the unflavored Isopure - it tasted a lot like a creamy Tomato Soup, and was great for breaking up the sweet-flavor overload from the Protein Shakes. I thought I hated V8 prior to the LRD, so I'm glad I gave it a try - it's not bad at all. I'm hoping I can find some basil in my spice cabinet and make a faux Tomato basil soup!

Finally, in the USA at least, there are these little "jars" of Better Than Boullion. Add a teaspoon of whatever flavor tickles you into some hot hot water until it dissolves, add unflavored Protein powder if you want, add some pepper or other seasonings if it makes you happy, and you've got yourself a delightful protein "soup". 😁

Other items that are awesome are sugar-free Bomb Pop popsicles and sugar-free Tropical Popsicles, sugar-free Jell-O, Propel and Gatorade Zero, Crystal Light mix-ins for your water, Protein2O water, and there's even Gatorade Zero w/Protein these days - I found a pack of the mix-in sticks on Amazon! Most Bone Broth I've tried makes me want to gag, with the exception of the LonoLife mix-in sticks (found some at my local grocery store, but found more flavors on Amazon).

Anyhoot, good luck to everyone doing their liver reducing diets, whatever your requirements may be! Mine's all liquid (and those 3 pickles...lol), I'm on day 6 of 14, and honestly it hasn't been all that bad. Just make sure you get enough protein spread out through the day, enough water, and get some electrolytes in (especially if you get leg cramps, nausea, headaches, or dizziness).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
