Question about discomfort

Recommended Posts

I know this may be a dumb question, but when will swallowing normally (not tiny sips) feel normal again? Any liquids are mostly fine, but I tried some stewed green Beans and there was discomfort even with over chewing them.

I’m 19 days post op and I’m struggling. But this is the decision I made, so I have no choice but to live with it. I’m taking my meds/vitamins and doing my best to get my Protein and Water in.

Will swallowing ever feel normal again? Will I ever eat normally again? I’m still on soft foods but mainly sticking to Protein Shakes and broth.

Thanks for taking the time to read and any info is appreciated. 🙂

Yes, you will. It just takes a little time while you’re healing. You may find warm/hot drinks more soothing on your throat. One day you realise you are eating & drinking pretty much like you always did.

I still tend to take smaller bites & sips but that’s a personal decision to eat & drink more consciously not because I can’t eat or drink more. Though I still can’t take more than two large mouthfuls of liquids at once. Not because of discomfort on swallowing but it seems to settle heavily in my tummy & my tummy gurgles & whines more. Just one of my quirks. Others can glug down glassfuls quite easily in time.

I just woke up thirsty and glugged down quite a bit of SF Raspberry tea and I'm over 4 months out from surgery.

Even though liquids usually pass through your new stomach pouch fairly quickly, it can be painful, especially early on, to drink too fast. Even more so with food in your tummy. Sometimes I wait longer than 30 minutes to drink after eating something.

Everyone's tolerance is a bit different but since hydration is crucial early on, I would say concentrate on getting your liquids in before anything else. I realized around 2 months I could drink instead of sip, and I was pretty relieved.

Not a dumb question, I felt the same way! Ask your doctor about a prescription for Hyosciamine. It helps control the spasming in your healing gut and makes swallowing a little less painful. I'm 6 months out and still take it sometimes. The only drawback is that it might make you a bit drowsy, but you get used to it pretty quickly. But like others said, this too will improve with time!

I’m 25 days post gastric bypass and I’m still having abdominal pain every time I try to eat anything off the approved list. Every morning, like right now, I’m going to have 1/4-1/2 cup of scrambled eggs but like every other day I end up throwing it all up. I’m afraid to eat anything now because I throw up anything I try to ingest. Now that I’m reaching my one month mark I’m not going to try and eat what is suggested. I’m so weak and hungry but I hate that I know it Wil just all come up. Depression has set in along with detachment from things i loved before: taking my family to the lake, walking my dog, etc. i just lost any interest because mainly I’m so angry that I can’t eat even the simplest things. I’m asking if anyone here has gone through this or is this not supposed to happen and I should see my bariatric physician? The one food i can eat without retching is a small tub of ready made Sugar Free Chocolate pudding cups from Jell-O. Looking to some help or answers to my problem. One more thing at times my chest feels so much pain it feels as if it wants to burst open so my doctor put me on hydrocodone for the pain but I rarely take them for fear of addiction and/or accidental overdose. I’m a mess and more than often I regret having this surgery even though I lost 54 lbs in 3 weeks and haven’t needed to take insulin for my diabetes-it’s been in very normal levels between 95-120 daily and my most painful neuropathy in hands and feel don’t hurt that much anymore. Thanks for reading my TedTALK and hopefully there’s a solution out there for me.

You should definitely speak with your medical team. It seems like there’s an issue going on internally. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this 😢

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
