Sleeve to Bypass revision (didn’t lose enough w/ sleeve)

Recommended Posts

I had the sleeve done and only lost 30% of my excess body weight. Typically they like to see you at 60% of your excess body weight. They had me on Wegovy and that didn’t work so I’m now scheduled for a bypass revision. For people in the same boat that lost some but not a lot the first time, how much did you lose after revision? I’m hoping because I have so much weight to lose that it will come off the way it should have the first time

I had to have a revision for other reasons, but I can tell you that you lose a lot less with it than the initial surgery. I'm 5 weeks post op, and I've lost 16 pounds. This time last year, I had lost 30. So you lose roughly half as much with a revision as you do from the initial surgery. Revisions tend to be worth it more if you have complications from the initial surgery (like I did). Additional weight loss isn't really a huge reason since you lose slower and less than the original surgery.

Have your team found out why you lost less than expected OP? It must be so disappointing - I know we all gear ourselves up for 60-70% with the sleeve. Some of us lose less and some more but of course we always want to be the ones who do best. I'm really sorry you're having to go through another procedure and I hope this one helps you get where you want to be.

If you sit back and analyse, can you see anything you could have done differently last time? If so then this might be the time to plan ahead so that doesn't happen again. If you were just one of the unlucky ones then I suspect that if you stick rigidly to the plan again you might lose lots more if the bypass suits you better - just a bit more slowly this time as sleevediva said.

I wish you all the best. Please let us know how you do xxx

Did you have excess weight to lose before you had your revision?
My doctor actually recommended the revision for the extra weight loss

Thank you! They just tell me that there is a small percentage of people that the sleeve just doesn’t work for and unfortunately I am part of that. My mom is 12 yrs out from her sleeve and from day one I have been able to eat/drink more than she can to this day. I have a been working with the nutritionist this whole process aswell

I did, but I wasn't done with my weight loss when it became obvious I needed to have the revision. I lost 116 pounds in 9 months and was still losing when the complications slammed into me and I was told I had to have the revision. I never would have gotten it and would have continued to work my sleeve, my diet, and my working out had I not had so many insane issues happen.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
