Pre-Surgery Liquid Diet

Recommended Posts

Hello!
Newbie here👋🏽 I finished my first official day of being on an all liquid diet and honestly I’m hangry, I’m a bit irritated, and I just want to eat! Lol but I’m hoping after about day 3 or 4 I don’t feel the need to eat like I used to. Any tips on how to curve the craving for food in general?? Surgery date is August 7th😮‍💨

Like you pointed out, it will get a little better after day three. Your body starts to acclimate to the reduced calories.

The bad news is, well, it sucks. There’s no getting around it and it’s one of the harder parts of the journey.

I tried to find distractions around the house and tried to stay as busy as possible. Use this time also to rest for your upcoming surgery. Get lots of sleep.

Hang in there!

I’m definitely going to try and stay busy and get some rest. My grandmother had the surgery about a year ago almost so I plan on staying with her because I’m thinking being around her will help me get through this part!

If it's a full liquid diet, Protein Shakes are the most filling. I use Premier Protein shakes 30g Protein. Also, I was allowed sugar free drinks, chicken broth, beef broth, and Bone Broth. I would add a scoop of unflavored protein to the broths to give it a SLIGHTLY creamy texture. For something to chew on, sugar free Jello and sugar free popsicles saved me.

I don’t believe I’m allowed to eat any solid foods. I planned on calling my surgeon to validate that I’m supposed to be on a full liquid diet.

And yes! I did 3 shakes yesterday (breakfast, lunch, dinner) with 2 Jello cups for a snack in between and a popsicle if I just need to chew something. It’s day 2 and so far I feel less irritated than I did yesterday lol so we are moving along okay! I do however feel a bit nauseous which I’m sure is normal

By day 4, you should be feeling much better. It takes a bit to detox from carbs, but once you do, you'll feel good. Best of luck!

P.S. I really looked forward to the broths because I needed something savory, not just liquids that were sweet. I would do a Protein Shake for Breakfast, lunch, snack, and save the broth for dinner.

Thank you! I just got off the phone with the doctor and he said I don’t have to be on a liquid diet until he tells me to be so should I continue? Or maybe just watch what I’m eating?

Well, I started my SEMI liquid diet 30 days before I was to start my actual liquid diet because I wanted to. I lost 30 lbs. in 30 days. My doc wanted me to lose weight before he performed the surgery. I would do 3 Protein Shakes, 5-6 bottles of Water, and a good, solid, no carb dinner. I wanted to lose as much as possible to help out my surgeon. My dinners would be bun-less cheeseburgers, pizza toppings (no crust), grilled or boiled chicken, pork chops, steak, and different kinds of cheeses. I would leave out anything that was bread/tortilla/pasta or a "side." Your best bet is to discuss it with your doctor. Follow his instructions. It's different for everyone because we all have different starting weights, different weight loss goals, different pre-existing health issues, and different doctors.

Oh wow that’s amazing! Do you mind me asking what your goal weight is and how you are sustaining the weight loss over time? And you’re right we all have something different and with different doctors it’s best to go by what he says then lol

This is my "ticker." It shows my starting weight (black), my current weight (blue), and my goal weight (green). I'm a revision from a 14-year-old sleeve to a bypass 35 days ago.

That’s a really neat tool! Is it something that your doctor hooked you up with? Or something you were able to get on your own?

The pre-op diet is really difficult for all of us OP.

A full 2 weeks of liquids before surgery is one of the stricter regimes I've seen but if that's what your surgeon is telling you to do then you'll need to do it. Hope it gets easier every day.

I wish you the best of luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
