Is A Sonogram Required Prior To Surgery

Recommended Posts

I Had surgery on 12/17/07. I did the lowfat diet and pre-opt diet. I went in to surgery and they couldn't put the band in because the surgeon said my liver was too heavy. People who have had gastric bypass done said they needed to have a sonogram done prior to surgery. Has anyone had to do this for the band. Imagine my disappointment to wake up in recovery to find out that 7 incisions later, no band.

Wow, I am so sorry to hear about your disappointment. Is there anything you can do? Best wishes Lana

Wow, that is horrible.

My doctor did a sonogram a month pre-op.. said my liver was borderline too big, and made me do a shrink your liver diet, but unless I was already knocked out, he didn't do another one. He had told me before if my liver ended up too big when they went to laproscopically place it, they would just convert to an open-surgery.

Did you doctor put you on a liver shrinking diet before surgery? Or just a low fat diet?

Usually a liver shrinking diet is where you eat a low carb, low fat, adequate Protein diet. You have to burn off the glycogen in your muscles and liver and then fat comes next. Is that the kind of pre op diet you were on?

I was on a liver shrinking diet and pre-opt diet. I found out later that the doctor told his p.a. that my spleen was too mushy. he said if he had converted to an open surgery he could have damaged my spleen and that with an open it would have caused me more trouble than it was worth.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
