Terrible left side pain

Recommended Posts

I had a gastric sleeve to bypass revision with a hiatal hernia repair on July 17. They sent me home with 15 percocets, Zofran and spasm medications. I took Tylenol and then percocet if the tylenol did not help, finished the percocets kept trying tylenol with no relief.

The pain was so bad I had to call the nurse on post op day 4 and ask her for something else, she gave me flexeril. It does not help at all. I tried hot packs, gasx and the spasm medications as well. Drinking Water and walking.

My left side is very very tender and painful. Nurse told me it was normal since I had stitches inside in that specific side.

Yesterday I went to the supermarket and i couldn't even speak or take a deep breath from the pain, it was so so bad.

I'm calling the nurse back tomorrow (post op day 7) and see what else I can do.

Did anybody go through this? How long does it last?

I feel so discouraged and I'm regretting this surgery so so bad.

I'm sorry you're feeling this way. Please make sure to get it checked as soon as you can. I had a sleeve 14 years ago, and the most I felt was soreness on my tummy from the incisions. It felt like I'd been exercising. Sometimes it can just be gas, but you don't want to chance a leak. If the pain is very sharp and consistent, even after all you're doing to try to alleviate it, you should really get it checked. Please feel better!

You have just had major surgery. Please dont push your body to do more than is comfortable. Chances are the pain is emanating from the anchor stitch that the surgeon put in. Take the Tylenol four times a day to lay a basis in which the stronger medications can work from.

You will also still be swollen from the surgery. Give it time. Always check in with the surgeon to be reassured.

Hope you feel better soon.

So I called nurse and she basically told me it is normal and to keep taking tylenol ( even though it doesn't work )

It sounds like a combination of gas pain (gasx doesn't help with that - use a heating pad and walk, walk, walk), incision pain, and pushing your body too much too soon. Walking is good, traveling to the store, walk around the whole thing, and traveling home is too much. You just had MAJOR surgery, you have to be gentle with your body and understand it's trying to heal. Between short walks, get plenty of rest and fluids. Tylenol will help if you take it enough (2-3 tylenol 4x per day works well).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
