July 15th marked my 4th year post VSG to RNY

I started with VSG in 2017 and was converted to RNY IN 2019. There seems to be more revision post lately but not a lot of long term revisioners or info floating around so feel free to ask me anything!

Congratulations! That's so awesome. I'm 27 days post op with a revision from a 14-yr-old sleeve to a bypass. I was wondering what kind of Vitamin routine you use. Also, at what point (like what month out) were you able to eat a little bread or tortilla? I know we shouldn't, but it is really completely off limits forever? The literature I was given says not to eat it because it "can become a ball of dough in your stomach."

I take a Multivitamin and Calcium regularly (not everyday if I am being honest because sometimes I forget) I add everything else periodically because I can usually feel when I need something like more b12/iron/Vit D. They are either small tablets or some version of a chewable.

My plan didn’t require that I stay away from bread products and I despise soft breads so I didn’t have an issue tolerating the types I liked. Since your plan does ask for you to avoid it, I would.
I still don’t chew gum, eat popcorn or drink carbonated beverages because those were in my original instructions 6 yrs ago.

Abstaining for now won’t hurt you. Revisit the conversation with your surgeon at your 6 month follow up.

Congrats on the revision

I'm not a revision patient, just an eight-years-out RNY patient, but I can eat bread products now (have been able to for awhile), but I don't eat a lot of them since they sit in my stomach like a brick and stay there for awhile. I don't think I ate any of them at all the first year or two, though.

Hi. :) What was your post-op/recovery like VSG versus RNY?

Oddly, I am seeing more people say their recovery from RNY was easier. I went back to work 3 days after my VSG in 2012. I will be taking 4 weeks off for my revision because I am older now (lol) and because I can (have the work availability to do so) - having a six year old and husband also that I'll still need to care for. I have a desk job and work from home, so am glad I'll be able to return to work in that atmosphere at least.

I had a rough recovery from VSG (a solid 2 weeks of strong pain) and the revision was much easier (maybe 3 days of mild pain)

Honestly the only thing I remember being harder was bathroom issues (constipation/frequent urination) immediately post op.

@GreenTealael Thanks for your post. How was your weight loss after the revision? Many have said they didn't feel any restriction like with the sleeve which was my concern.

I am currently on my pre-op diet for this week, my revision surgery is scheduled for Monday Aug. 28th.

My weight remained around the same but I had a revision at my goal weight. Also my surgeon was modest with the length of my bypass (less than 150) because he was adamant that I shouldn’t lose more much weight (his preference from his experience- YMMV)

For me, It is not the same restriction as the VSG. The VSG was a mid chest tightness like something was stuck. RNY feels like a lower abdomen fullness of eating way too much. I always try to stop before I get to that point. But I can eat pretty much the same amount with the RNY as with the VSG. I hope that helps ❤️

@RTL1234 Hey there! Surgery went well per surgeon. Swelling is a lot! I look like I'm in my 2nd trimester! 😕 Thankfully they gave me an abdomen band that helps stabalize me while up and walking which helps tremendously. My weight day of surgery went from 195 to 202 due to fluid/swelling etc. I pray it starts to subside soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
