August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

Recommended Posts

You’ll stop losing weight at some point. Don’t freak out, but eventually the surgery stops working. Also, your body knows when to stop. Then you have to learn how to maintain without the help.

Hit goal a few days ago, but now I’m worried about the “bounce” that people talk about, so I’m going to keep on for another 20lb. And I actually wonder if I’ll ever be able to STOP losing weight, since I eat so few calories. Still in the 700 range most days. How is everyone else doing?

Wow! Congrats! I'm still a ways out from my goal 😣 Great job. Unfortunately, I've only lost 69lbs so far, it seems my goal of 120 is years away. Actually, I'm getting a little worried..I seem to be slowing down quite a bit.

I completely understand about the bounce back..I've heard a lot about it and think you've got the right idea to lose another 20 to nip it in the bud!

Again, congrats you did great - just do the last thing to show the world and update your ticker to celebrate!

Anyone experiencing itchy skin? My stomach and back itches very badly, no rashes or dry skin is the issue. It itches along my stretch marks.

I had Gastric Bypass on 8/16/24, I am down 63lbs.

Any solutions or similar experiences?

Having worked in a dermatology clinic...(although I'm not a doctor) I heard this complaint a lot. Keep the stretch marks moisturized, Cereve is what was recommended. But if it gets to itchy..corticosteroid cream can help with the itch... If it gets to bad..see a dermatologist.

This occurs because your skin is attempting to heal itself, the nerves transmit the itch feeling as part of it healing.

Hi Angela,

I had gastric sleeve in Aug 2023, and had an itchy rash on my chest and stomach about 3 weeks later. I consulted my surgeon’s office, and they thought it was hives or a reaction to medication. They recommended I stop taking my new Multivitamin.< br />

After two weeks of itching, I had some prescription antifungal cream and applied it just trying to get some relief. It went away immediately. Just had some sort of skin fungal infection. I’ve never had that before…just althlete’s foot. But I’m guessing our bodies go through some trauma after surgery and have a weakened immune system. I’m sure your doc can write you a script. Worth trying.

Oh, and since others are updating, I am down 70 lbs. I need to exercise more than the occasional walk. Honestly this has been pretty easy for me, I’ve been able to tolerate a wide variety of food and adjusted well.

Omg! My belly and back have been itching on and off for weeks. I hadn't connected it to the surgery and weight loss, I thought I was just having some weird reaction or something. I'm so thankful for you all asking questions and sharing knowledge.

I am losing massive amounts of hair really picked up two weeks ago. Had some blood work done and was low on a few Vitamins and minerals hoping getting those up helps considering cutting it all off to help hide the thinness

I’ve been undergoing revision on my 2004 gastric bypass. I’ve noticed that my hair looks and feels thinner. I hadn’t connected it to the revision. Thank you!

Had SIPS/SADI 8/15/23. My hair started shedding noticeably around Thanksgiving and hasn’t let up. It’s disheartening, but part of the journey. I’m down 86 LBS and the last month has been a slow go but I have been slacking in the exercise dept. Happy New Year to all.

Happy New Year Everyone‼️

I want to hear how everyone is doing with the Hair loss. I’m experiencing significant hair shedding. Is anyone else??

Let me know what you are doing and how long is it happening?

Thanks

Significant. I'm just thankful its winter and I can wear stocking caps. I've been losing it for about two - three months now. There is nothing you can do. Biotin etc..work on growing hair, not keeping it. The hair falling out now is old hair. I've read it should start stopping around 6-8 months post op <crossing fingers>. I have heard it comes back thicker, although I think that's just because you're used to the thinner hair so it seems like it.

I'm not losing as quick as others..only down 70. This month and last two months have slowed significantly.

Happy New Year back at you!

I had a thick head of hair, thankfully, however I've been shedding like mad for the past 6 weeks. (Surgery was mid August). I've been taking all my Vitamins and one for hair skin and nails but sure doesn't seem to be working. My dietitian suggested to start taking collagen, she also said my Hair loss should stop around 8 months. Unflavored beef Gelatin is all collagen so I came up with a recipe for Jello cubes and just started that. I'm down 87 lbs. My face has been breaking out something awful and I'm nearly 67. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue.

I wish everyone great success.

Is anyone else still having trouble eating real food. For the most part I am still eating soft foods. When I try to eat anything else I get that feeling of the food being stuck and end up in pain.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
