How long after surgery could you drink caffeine ?

Recommended Posts

I always had one cup of coffee in the morning ,and it seems like now that I've had the VSG and hiatel hernia repair , caffeine hurts my stomach when I drink it. (Feels like bad heartburn) I've heard some people go back to drinking coffee right away. I'm still taking Prilosec , but no luck with anything that has caffeine in it. What about you ?

My plan cut out caffeine the first 2 weeks. I absolutely jumped back in the second I could! Thankfully, it never caused me any trouble, but everyone is different.

While it is upsetting you avoid it. The caffeine can be far too harsh on your healing tummy (all those cut open internal wounds) which is why most are to,d to avoid it. Check with your team as to when you can resume drinking it & then only if you are able.

I was told I could have herbal or green tea straight away (I drank green tea always anyway so I was very happy) if you’re looking for a warm drink but check with your team about this being an option too.

I could reintroduce caffeine at 5 weeks post-op. I quit drinking coffee long before my WLS due to the hiatal hernia that I didn't know I had. But was having massive acid reflux whenever I drank it, so I stopped.

Now with surgery and hernia repair, I can enjoy again but my Nut was adamant about me waiting the 5 weeks.

Same as Babyspoons, 5 weeks, one cup, no issues.

I had a sleeve and had no restriction placed on caffeine intake either pre or post op. I drank coffee from day 1. But everyone is different and you sound like you're listening to your body OP - maybe just try it again in a few weeks when you've healed a bit more.

I just started drinking black coffee at 2 months, and even then, I maybe only have 3 or 4 cups a week. Tea is a bit easier on your stomach, though not as much caffeine. The biggest problem with caffeine is that it's a diuretic.

I was told to never drink it. I really love the warm, deep umami flavor of coffee, so I brought it back in around 4 months. The caffeine could inhibit your Iron absorption. It did for me. I just take my iron with Vitamin C at lunchtime as a work around.
