Disappointed

Hello good people! Today July 3rd, 2023 I had my surgery. I’m a little disappointed. I am glad I had the surgery, but due to my pancreas was positioned wrong. The Duo Switch was turned into a Sleeves.

I am now wondering was it worth it after all. My surgeon told my partner that they going to have to CAT scan on my stomach/pancreas to ensure it’s not a cancer issue. I am bombed to find out I’m in this much pain and did not get what I thought would be done. Also, for me to know that my weight loss may not be as successful as I put my mind. The surgeon may have to go back in later and work around my issue to complete the Duo Switch.😭😭


I read so many article where people had the sleeve and then had the bypass done. I just want to be healthy and happy without GERD, now I do not know what to expect. I did a lot of my research for the Duo-Switch.

Anybody had total research with the sleeve ONLY? 😔

Maybe 40% can develop gerd after a sleeve & some of those can manage it with medication & dietary changes (no or reduced caffeine, spicy food, carbonation), or behavioural changes (don’t eat before bed, raise the head of your bed).

I had minor reflux before my sleeve surgery which I managed with dietary choices. Rarely needed meds. Still have it after surgery but it’s different. Don’t have the hideous muscle straining hiccups anymore - huge win. I take medication every day but otherwise it’s manageable.

I know you are disappointed you did not get the surgery you were expecting but you will find there are similarities in how you manage/live with your sleeve and what you would have done with your DS. The sleeve is part of a DS. It used to be done as a two surgeries - tummy then after a couple of months the intestinal redirection. You may not see it now, but a positive is discovering the issue with your pancreas & are investigating the cause & any treatment you may need. Maybe if the issue with your pancreas is remedied, you may be able to proceed with the rest of your DS.

The surgery pain will be gone in a couple of days and in a couple of months when you’re past the staged return to eating diet, your tummy is less sensitive & you have a better understanding of food choices, portions sizes, nutrition etc. & you’re losing weight & are healthier, you’ll look back & wonder why you were so disappointed.

I love my sleeve. Yes, I have a couple of quirks with my tummy but I did before surgery too so no real change just a little different. I lost all my weight & more so it’s been very successful.

I'm so sorry this happened, let yourself grieve a little but please don't let it over burden you. Each WLS offers the opportunity to change your weight and life enormously. Do the right things and success will follow. Sleeves work for thousands of people.

My fingers are crossed that there is no cancer.

First off, hugs to you—. I am sorry this happened to you, but also want to assure you that this is really not a set back. It’s a step forward— and like others said before, it is good they found the issue now so you can get ahead of it if it something to be concerned about. I have the sleeve, and so far it has been VERY successful for me. No GERD, no dumping, nothing— and the weight is coming off. The first three days after any surgery are HARD- but I promise you it does get better.

My thoughts—Use the tool you have today to get to the next chapter of your journey, then if you need the DS and qualify, you can make that decision then. We are rooting for you!

like Arabesque said, the DS used to be done in two phases - first they'd do a sleeve, then they'd go back in later and bypass the small intestine. So as long as things work out with your pancreas, they can always go back in and do phase 2. meanwhile, it's a good thing they found the problem so they can deal with it now before it gets worse (that is, if it would have gotten worse).

honestly, weight loss is really more about the person vs the type of surgery. you as an individual will likely lose the same amount of weight no matter which wls you choose.

do the best that you can and you will get where your effort will take you ❤️

for what it's worth, i had the sleeve and lost everything that i wanted to. and i believe i would've got to the same place eventually if i had bypass or ds or whatever**.

Ah, man, I'm sorry... Plenty of people lose a lot of weight with the sleeve. I hope they can get everything figured out for you.

I wouldn't let getting a different type of procedure dictate your success; I have a sleeve and the primary problem I have is that I can't STOP losing.
