New annoying, and painful, post op discovery....

Recommended Posts

So I noticed over the last 2-3 days that the arm that I had the IV in is REALLY hurting, swollen a bit just above where I had the IV, and is firm to the touch. I had to get the IV in the crook of my arm because there were no other good veins. Anyway, this morning has been the worst so far, and it's gone from annoying to concerning. Anyone ever had this? Not sure if it's worth going to the ER for or if it can wait until tomorrow since today is Sunday.

This sounds a lot like phlebitis to me. I’ve had it twice before after IVs. They also could have infiltrated your IV during your hospital stay. I’m a very hard stick and both IVs in each of my arms became infiltrated during my sleeve procedure.

I got that too, after my surgery. It's an infiltration. Hot compresses should help.

I had a horrible experience with an IV. My whole arm was completely bruised from my fingers all the way up to my biceps. I had totally forgotten that experience until I read your post. Basically what I was told is if I have more than normal swelling, increased pain and redness, and especially a fever, seek immediate medical care. Feel better soon.
