Ate solid foods immediately after fills-feeling no restriction

Recommended Posts

I have now had about 5 fills. After the first 3, I definately felt restriction. I went to my doctor about a week ago for another fill and felt absolutely nothing! I walked away feeling less restricted than I went in feeling -- it was almost like I had never had the surgery. I called the office and explained my concern and they had me go back in for another fill yesterday. Again, the same thing. I feel no restriction. I must make a confession, however. My doctor ALWAYS tells me not to eat solid foods for two days after each fill. After the last two fills I cheated and ate solid food, but was extremely careful taking small bites and chewing thoroughly. Could the fact that I started eating solid foods immediately after my fills be the reason why I cannot feel any restriction? Or, could there be another reason. What should I do??? Should I go back to my doctor and fess up that I did not follow his directions and get another fill. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've always eaten solid foods after my fills and haven't had any problems. I will say that my last fill two days ago is just now starting to kick in with a restriction. We are all different. The NWWLS where I got my band said I can eat after a fill just be careful. I would call your doctor's office for their opinion though I don't think eating solid foods is your problem.

Take care.

I would wait a while. I have had 3 fills and my restriction has been kicking in around 2 weeks after the fill. I still do the liquid, mushie thing for 2 days after a fill. Why do anything that might cause me problems. Are your fills with flouro? Maybe get one like that to "see" if everything is ok.

i have had about 15 fills over the past 10 months and i pretty much always ate whatever i wanted after it. For me the fills took about a week or two to kick in for some reason. I figured it out and just waited for it. Everybody is different but give it a week or two. Of course you could have a leak somewhere. If it still doesn't get better see if the Dr. can check for it.

Yes, I will call the doctor just for his input. It's good to know that my issue "probably" isn't because I ate solid foods after my fills. I appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

Dave01, you're absolutely right!!! I should not put my progress in jeopardy by disobeying my doctor's instructions. I won't do it again. I don't know anything about "flouro." I believe they use saline for my fills. I will inquire about this, however, at my next doctor visit. I appreciate your feedback.

Mary, not sure if it matters, but I found that if I ate just before getting a fill, that I only got a small one. Maybe the stomach was full or something. Just a thought though

Thank you JBTullis, for your advice. I think I will wait a couple of weeks to see if my fills start to kick in. I sure hope I don't have a leak, but if I don't start to feel any restriction soon, I will ask my doctor to check for one. Thanks again.

My dr doesnt use it, but flouro is like an xray where they can watch the Fluid pass thru the band when you drink. Some dr's use this to measure how much of a fill to give. I think this is how it works.

Yes sometimes that restriction doesn't hit for a bit. When it does you will certainly know. Just remember its a process that takes time. This band is a slower process but I think we will keep the weight off healthy because its slower. We also learn how to eat and take care of our bodies as we gradually get these fills. Good luck.

First of all why are none of you listening to your doctors. This is exactly why you will be crying that you failed. You are not supposed to eat solids after a fill because of swelling. I do not understand why people have weight loss surgery and do as they want too. It can take several weeks to feel the full effect of a fill. Stop doing as you please and follow your doctors advice.

I am with Cheryl... follow the doctors orders.... otherwise why bother?

Ladies (and gentlemen) not all surgeons require liquid for a day after a fill, mine certainly doesn't.

So, if the OP's surgeon has a similar lapband philosophy as mine...then we need to take that into consideration.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
