Hi All,

First time posting but long time lurker:) I had my sleeve done 4 years ago. In the last year or so I have been ticking upwards in my weight but the reflux is terrible. My surgeon did not screen me for a hiatal hernia before my surgery and did a repair during my VSG. The hernia has increased in size when I had an endoscopy done last year but my insurance at the time wouldn’t cover a revision. Now I have insurance that will cover revision. I had a virtual consult with my original surgeon and he has reservations about doing a revision because of my low BMI and maybe just a repair. WHAT?! I have had a repair. He wants to do another endoscopy but him saying this is confusing to me. Has anyone had their surgeon suggest such a thing? I don’t want to continue to gain weight but I really do not want to continue to live with GERD. I’ve not been successful in managing the GERD or stopping the regain (even if slow).

Honestly, I'd get a second opinion. Especially since you have GERD. I'm not sure if an HH repair will help the GERD or not, but you shouldn't have to live with it either. And, long-term PPI medications are not ideal. Good luck!

I’m glad I found your post! Hoping for an update from you!

I had a sleeve in 2020, but have had a tremendous amount of issues unfortunately. Had my gallbladder out since, and have horrid GERD. My surgeon does want to do a revision, but today I found out I have a HH, but I never had one before my sleeve. Annoying! My insurance requires a waiting period and I’m like really?! I’m miserable!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
