Gastric Sleeve 6/15/23 and now lactose intolerant

Recommended Posts

I had issues with dairy for a few weeks after surgery. It's a lot better now in smaller doses. I've had ricotta, cheese, and yogurt just fine. I'm not a fan of milk right now. I'm not sure why, it just doesn't appeal to me. So maybe try dairy again in a few weeks to a month and see how you do.

I'm a BIG milk lover and my dairy based Protein Shakes upset my stomach quite a few times the first couple weeks after surgery. I noticed though that I was able to eat other dairy products with no problem. Also, some do have trouble with air bubbles causing gas, etc. from blending their drinks. I continued drinking milk despite the random bouts of running to the bathroom.

Thankfully mine wasn't lactose intolerance. Just a fussy tummy. It eventually got better and became a non-issue.

It can happen though it’s usually just a temporary sensitivity. Try some lactose free or plant based products instead. So many to choose from these days.

PS - Lactose free skim milk can taste very sweet so if you are sensitive to sweet at the moment just use the full fat/cream version. The fat content isn’t that much & shouldn’t have much impact on your total fat content for the day … unless you’re drinking gallons.

yep - common but for most people, temporary

I'm one of those weird people that developed all kinds of weird stuff after my sleeve surgery. I developed a nasty shellfish allergy and I'm completely lactose intolerant. I can only have almond milk (which is ok because it's healthier and gives more calcium). I get the unsweetened vanilla almond milk. For icecream, I also get the lactose free, low carb, low sugar pints of Rebel icecream.

i had a mild case of lactose intolerance prior to wls. i was able to eat ice cream for instance, but not drink a glass of milk.

since surgery (4.5+ years ago), i seem to have gotten more sensitive to dairy, where i now have to have a lactose pill to enjoy ice cream or creamy Soups with no issues.

cheese, however seems to still be ok. yay!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
