How long after surgery did you wait to have sushi (minus the rice).

The head hunger is real.

I have had Sushi twice since surgery both with rice, 1st time was around 3 months, was only able to have 2 to 3 pieces, and last time was around 5 months, I was able to have 4 to 5 pieces. I feel like I do not get to chew properly the rice so I have limit it since and because the Protein content is low compared to the amount of carbs eating.

Once on solid food there’s nothing really stopping you from having sashimi … except maybe if your tummy is ready. Watch the soy sauce though - the Water retention can affect the scale.

I often had smoked salmon wrapped around wedges of cucumber - often with cream cheese (not Japanese I know) but you could do a little low fat mayo & wrap it in some seaweed.

That sounds good. I may have to try that.

I keep trying smoked salmon but my taste buds hate it now, I would have eaten it all day everyday pre surgery. I can eat Gravadlax sometimes. I ate raw tuna at 3 months. I have just begun eating the sushi with the rice. I do prefer sashimi now.

I think I started eating sashimi fairly early on (after I was given the go-ahead to eat solid foods). I eat regular sushi now, too, and have for a long time - but I think it was at least a few months if not longer before I tried that (i.e, because of the rice)

I had sushi with rice at around 3 months post-op (with my program's approval!). I had zero problems with it, but even at almost 9 months post-op, I can still only eat 3-4 pieces at a time.

I made the mistake one day of watching a tv show, The Doctors, and the subject was about a woman who ate Sushi everyday and complaining of horrible stomach/intestinal pain. Turns out she was full of parasites. Uhhhh!! I have never been able to try any type of raw fish since. And the only Sushi I ever did eat was in Vegas but it was cooked.

Am I missing out? IDK but maybe that helped a bit with your cravings for it @LindsayT. LOL

That's why you don't buy it at a gas station..
Lol. While that's gross to think about, I love sushi and have never had any issues.

Before surgery I could only eat a small amount of smoked salmon - too rich & strong a flavour - so rarely ate it. After I was eating it pretty regularly until one day it was nope can’t do it & it was suddenly like before surgery. It was palatable only for the time my tastebuds were changed. So weird sometimes.

3 months. Interestingly, sushi seems to be the only context I don't have issues with rice. I can eat maybe 3-4 pieces even now at 22 months PO.

This probably would have a similar restriction level due to the raw veggies but I do little "sushi stacks" for lunch sometimes where I place raw cucumber slices and use them almost like crackers and put crabmeat, smoked salmon, avocado, sushi ginger etc. on top, sometimes with cream cheese or Sriracha, sprinkle sesame seeds on top. While it's not exactly the same but with no rice it is low carb, easy to put together, and incorporates a lot of the same flavors (you can experiment with doing things like tossing the toppings in rice vinegar or soy sauce, the sky is the limit)

i didn't have sushi until way into maintenance...probably like 2 years post op or so.

however, i did have sashimi pretty regularly starting at around 4-5 months post op. i think the first time i only had 1 piece (barely), but i eventually graduated to like 2-3 peices by the 1-yr post op mark. Nowadays (at 4.5+ yrs post-op) i could have like 6-7 peices (of sashimi) in one sitting so long as i don't eat anything else. As for sushi or maki/rolls, I could probably have like 2-3 in one sitting....but i don't have it as often as sashimi, cuz i don't like to waste stomach space on rice, lol.

Is that a thing? Even worse. 🤢

But I will admit, reading the responses here, sounds kinda good. I may try it at some point. Just not from a gas station.

The gas station sushi is typically comprised of only cooked ingredients and is normally things like California rolls. I don't think I'd trust it from a grimey out-of-the-way gas station but a perfectly clean convenience store that sells other food? I don't really know how that's any more sketchy than a grocery store.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
