High B12 and AST and Alt levels at 2nd year post op visit?

Recommended Posts

Hi there has anyone experienced elevated B12 levels and AST and Alt at the 2 year follow up appt? Just curious now if any of these are due to the surgery I’ve never had issues before my B12 levels are now at 3000! I did not get any feedback on these issues and honestly felt like the support at my 2yr follow up appt just wasn’t there..it felt very rushed which wasn’t my experience at my one year appt. I’m curious if any others have encountered this issue with your postop visits. I appreciate everyone’s feedback!

I had elevated AST and ALT my second year. Last test was a couple of months ago, and it is going down. I have had high B12 numbers off and on because of the supplements ~2000 pg/mL. You may want to speak to your regular doctor about your B12 though. There are some serious causes for high B12 and they don't have anything to do with your WLS.

My B12 always runs high (1000+), but it's usually met by a shrug at the bariatric clinic. It wasn't until it once went up over 2000 that they suggested I cut back a bit on my supplement. So a high B12 after surgery isn't necessarily unusual, but 3000 is pretty high. Yea - maybe check with your regular doctor just in case. It can sometimes be caused by some serious condition, but they could also find nothing and just have you cut back on your supplementation. But it's probably good to get anything serious ruled out (and it could be that they could tell by your other lab values that there wasn't anything odd going on - but then, I don't know that. I'd just check with your PCP if you're concerned)

High AST and ALT aren't uncommon after surgery, but they usually normalize around the second year. But like the person above said, sometimes it takes a little longer. I can't remember when mine went down (actually I just checked - at 2 years 3 months out, mine was still high. It did eventually drop down to normal, though)

P.S. I just looked through my MyChart and noticed that when I had AST/ATL checked at 2 years 7 months out (as part of a metabolic panel) they were normal. So it was during my third year that they normalized (although I lost weight until month 20 since I started out at over 300 lbs)

I just had my 6 month follow up and my B12 was 1728, I was asked to reduce my weekly 1ml sublingual dose to half. They said there is new research that shows B12 is accumulated and not peed out like it was thought.

My first lab test was one month post op and both liver test were high and I was told by my Primary and Surgeon that it is normal, as long as the bilirubin and Protein were within range, not to worry about it. This time around everything was within range.

YES! I’m having liver flares of high alt/ast and Vitamin B 12 over 2000. Mine come in flares and I get excruciating pain and end up in the hospital. My last high liver flares were so high I lost use of my legs temporarily. It was SO scary, the doctors told me I was crazy basically and after 6 months I finally got a doctor to believe me that something is wrong and he thinks it’s from the bypass :( I have neurological issues suddenly and I’ve always taken Vitamins as directed. My highest weight was 227, lowest 137, currently at 150. I didn’t lost a crazy amount of weight but I’ve never been sicker and I never thought it could of been from bypass. I regret the surgery big time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
