Weight Regain at 3 Weeks

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

This is my 3rd week post-op and I've finally switched to soft foods!! However, I have gained 2 pounds. :( I'm still only having around 2 oz of food per meal. The only new items I've added are shredded chicken and low fat string cheese. Someone please tell me this is normal. I'm eating enough to gain 2 pounds but not enough to have a bm, what the heck!

You answered your own question. More food in, no food out. Your intestines are filling back up with food and Water.

Its normal…and will stabilize as you adjust and go through food phases.

you did not gain 2 lbs of true weight unless you've eaten 7000 more calories than your body needs. It's Water - or your intestines are filling up again. Very normal.

You're at the 3-week mark which is a very common point to either stall or even have a modest regain. You didn't mention what liquids you were drinking prior to now but if you weren't having much salt (from things like broth, for instance) and have now added things like cheese that can be kind of salty, it could also be Water weight which will resolve itself.

This will happen often while you are losing. Your weight loss won’t ever be a consistent straight line on a graph. It will go up & down, zig & zag & plateau. All to be expected. Our weight always fluctuates even when stable. Hormones, Water retention, Constipation, diarrhoea, eating or drinking a little more or a little less, doing more or less activity, etc. all play a part.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
