Elevated heart rate?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has/had experienced and elevated heart rate after surgery. I'm 15 days post op and my HR before surgery was ~65 bpm. It's currently sitting at 80-90 with spikes up to 114-120 after even just a little energy expenditure. I'm drinking about 70 oz water/day. I contacted my surgeon's office and they said to schedule an appointment with my regular doc which I did. I have an appointment tomorrow morning. Just looking to see if anyone else on here experienced this and if so, did it go away on it's own, or did it need treatment?

I had the opposite experience. My resting rate was 74, and that day after surgery it was 53. Now 19 months later my average is around 64, vacation time rate is 52 again. That’s beats per minute per Fitbit. I do wish you the best in figuring it out. When I have a virus, my rate increases dramatically. It’s my first clue that flu or Covid has come back (despite shots). I hope this passes quickly for you!

Yes, my resting heart rate went up at least 10 bpm the week or so after surgery and my Garmin watch showed I was highly stressed. But with the exception of a bad 24 hour stretch I had a good recovery and wasn't really in pain. Just my body doing its thing I guess. It's lower now at 5 weeks post-op than it was before surgery.

Same here- My Garmin watch keeps giving me highly stressed alerts as well. They mostly happen when I'm out and about at stores, parking lots, etc. I'm sure it's normal and will ease, but I am glad I have an appointment with the doc this a.m.

Just got back from the Doc. He said I'm anemic. I am currently taking 2 chewable flinstone Vitamins (as my surgeon recommended). They each have 18mg of Iron. I guess not enough. He asked that I check with the surgeon's office to see if I can take more. He did do an EKG that was normal and said that as long as my resting heart rate is under 100, it's considered normal and since it's on the "high end" of normal it make sense that it would spike higher with physical activity. I feel SO much better since seeing him. I haven't been anemic in the 3 years since I had a period and going through menopause! Thanks for your input, guys. I'm hoping once I'm fully healed and eating more normally and taking all the vitamins/supplements I'm supposed to that my heart rate and anemia will go back to their normal levels. :)

Update- I spoke to the PA at my surgeon's office. They recommended I start 325mg Ferrous Sulfate with a 500mg Vitamin C tab to increase the absorption for the anemia. We'll see......

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
