Self pay cost at Orlando Health

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

still in my research phase of finding a doctor and center for undergoing procedure and was curious if anyone has gone through self pay for gastric bypass with Orlando Health and if you would be willing to share information on the surgeon, cost and your experience with them in general.

thanks in advance

I am not sure what they charge, but I am in south Florida, Broward county... I paid $11,000 for surgery and overnight in the hospital. Besides that I think I spent $300 on lab work before hand.

hi SuziDavis,

If you don’t mind, could you share the doctor/facility and your experience?

Thanks Cat

Hi, of course! His name is Khallil Shillingford. the website is below. Pre-Op is mainly virtual, unless you have health risks... so that is super convenient. And I was always able to reach someone at the office mad the Doctor will give you a number to text him if needed. It was a great experience.

I second Dr. Shillingford. I’m in Tampa and did everything virtually. The fee for the surgery as of November 2022 was $11,500 and there is a separate $300 program fee which includes the fee to have the mandatory calls (medical history overview, education class and nutritional class) but it gives you lifetime access to the support group which has 3 meetings per month, one with the nutritionist Dr. Lillian (co-chair of ASMBS-IH FL) and 2 with Sandy/Jennifer the RN (one educational with Q&A and topics, the other for those less than a year out, open floor).

I used MD Now for the Preops exams, it was around $300, and the Doctor may require a Covid test even if the hospital does not. Note that the surgery is in the hospital or outpatient facility depending on your BMI. You can send them an email and they will answer pretty quickly, sometimes when I have questions, I get a response in less than 5 minutes.

I had my Gastrectomy done at Orlando Health with Dr. Muhamad Ghanem. He and his staff are AMAZING. They are very detailed in the information they provide, and spend time with you addressing questions and concerns. His number is 321-843-8900. Hope this helps.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
