3 months post mini gastric bypass. What do you guys think of my progress, diet and workout? Any feedback or suggestions?

Recommended Posts

I had a mini gastric bypass surgery exactly 3 months back. Since there didn't seem much activity on specific forum for mini gastric bypass (as it isn't common in US), so I thought i would put it in regular bypass forum.

Starting weight: 326 lbs

Current weight (exactly 3 months post Op): 252 lbs making total weight loss of around 74 lbs.

Diet: Currently taking 1000 (or maybe 1100 at times) calories. Protein rich diet with around 70 to 80g of daily protein and low carb. 3 meals and in-between I take Protein Shake, pure coconut Water (around 500 ml a day) and sometimes raw Tofu once or twice in day if I feel hungry. I use weighing scale to make sure I know how much I eat.

Workout: 4 to 5 miles of walk daily. Gym of 7 to 8 hours total every week. Main focus on HIIT and weights, and includes 2.5 hour of cardio.

I have felt since I started gym, my body feels more leaner and in shape but appetite has slightly gone up. Like maybe 3 extra tablespoon of Quinoa. But what do you guys think of my progress? Any red flags or caution? As now is the time to correct things if something is wrong.

Do you think a weight of 180 lbs is something achievable for me?

Thanks a lot.

74lbs in 3 months is excellent. I lost MUCH slower than that. You can absolutely make a weight of 180lbs a reality. I never thought I'd ever weigh in the 60s (kilograms), yet here I am and still losing. Stick to your plan and it will happen!

As for what you're doing, so long as your team are on board and you're managing it well, then there should be no issues. Just be mindful that muscle weighs more than fat, so get out the measuring tape as a secondary indicator that you're losing, otherwise the scales may trick you into thinking you're not doing as well as you are!

I personally love my mini bypass/omega loop, and could not be happier with my choice. It's a more common procedure in my country, but yes, on here we're a tiny group!

Thanks @Smanky and toodleure.

Smanky, yeah I shared it with bariatric team and they think I am doing fine. Actually I live in Canada and had my surgery done outside Canada (due to wait times), so not so much of physical visits :( with doctor. Mostly on video call, I share my progress every 3 months.

Yeah, so far so good. Let's see whats there in future. Doctor just told me not to overthink, eat healthy. As long as I am not throwing up or having dumping syndrome, it means I am eating well. Yeah I am very scared to eat nowadays, as I want to maintain the weight loss pace :) so using nutrition info and weight of food I eat to be on safer side. I have lost 30 to 45 Kg twice before the gastric bypass, but would always regain the weight.

Seems like you’re doing well on all fronts. I’d be celebrating. As to how well you’re doing & if there are red flags or things you’re missing that’s hard to tell as we’re all very different. Our bodies are physically, emotionally & psychologically different & have different nutritional needs & capabilities. We have different health situations, lifestyle demands, etc. Only you, your body, your surgeon, GP & dietician can best make that call.

180lbs is a possible goal but whether you’ll get to that weight or be able to maintain is unknown. Your final weight depends on many factors. The most influential is what your new set point is. This is the weight your body is now happiest at & is easiest to maintain. Lifestyle choices, medications, genetics, sustainability of your final eating style & activity regime all influence your final weight too. Remember not everyone reaches their goal. Not sure what the average weight loss stats are for mini bypass but it is about 65% for sleeve & bypass. (That is 65% of the weight you have to lose to put you at a healthier weight.) Of course some exceed that stat & some don’t reach it.

Celebrate every pound you lose. Celebrate how much healthier you are. Celebrate how much stronger you are & how much more energy you have. And not so much the final number on the scale (though we’re all guilty of doing that 😉).

You’re doing awesome! I’ve noticed the faster losers tend to get to goal because their body is still freaking out about the surgery (not everyone, I know, but only my observation.) You seem to be a fast looser. Like others have said, there’s a lot of factors. It’s possible to reach your goal if you do the work, AND your body agrees to it. Celebrate yourself now you’re doing great; haircut, nails, vacation… Life is short, yeah you!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
