Anyone have the hiatal hernia repair with gastric bypass?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I am very pre-op, but I am planning to have hiatal hernia repair done at the same time as the bariatric surgery. It will be months before I have a chance to meet with a surgeon and I'm not finding great information beyond the surgery taking a little bit longer and potentially some additional discomfort post-op.

Has anyone had this combo and how do you think recovery and post-op life differed compared to those who just had the weight loss surgery?

I had hiatal hernia repair done at the same time. I don’t think my recovery was any different because of that.

I had this Feb 13! While I was in recovery the surgeon came out and warned my husband that I would be quite sore on my left side due to it. While I had additional soreness, it was tolerable and I was sent home with typical non-narcotic pain meds and tylenol. In my opinion the tylenol helped significantly more than anything else so stock up on the liquid stuff if you can because grinding the tablets up and drinking it down with a little Water is so gross.

My incisions were all painless, except my side was quite tender for some time. Even now, when I bend certain ways or lay funny, it can be a little tender.

Yes, mine was just this past Monday. Like RaiderRhode, we were advised that my right side would be angrier than my left for a while. My understanding is that the hernia repair extended the surgery by about 30 mins and closing the area where it popped through took a stitch or two which makes swallowing a tiny bit uncomfortable, but it's getting easier. I think the part that nobody prepares you for is the trapped air in your abdomen immediately after surgery 😭. That was pretty miserable 😒. Other than that, a okay 😁

I had hiatal hernia repair during my bypass surgery. I had it done February 7th. I have had very little pain and not having any reflux has been amazing! I haven't felt this good in 6 to 7 years!
Good luck to you!

Yep, I had a hiatal hernia repair with my bypass. It was unexpected - I had no idea I had one (but in hindsight it explained a lot!) and neither did my surgeon until he got in there. My hernia was a large one, and had been forming for a long, long time apparently 😬. I honestly felt like I'd been hit by a truck for a good two weeks after surgery. My incisions were fine, but my insides took time to settle down. I slept with a pillow protecting my abdomen for a while. Pain medication kept it manageable, though.

Once healed it was all smooth sailing though. Just gotta weather those first weeks while you're healing.

Sleeved on 9-1-22 and hernia repair. Everything went great. Trapped air in the abdomen is not fun and can press on your heart. Walk as much as they will allow. I didn't even have to take any pain meds. Best wishes!

Thank you everyone. This helps put my mind at ease, at least that it will likely only be a little bit more discomfort and might make it a little harder to swallow.

I keep hearing about the trapped air and it does sound miserable. I'm hoping to learn and practice a bit of deep breathing and maybe meditation to help make it through any tough times after the surgery as I can get very high anxiety but just in specific circumstances (like in a CT machine, deadlocked in traffic, etc.).

I am actually looking forward to getting rid of the reflux and indigestion, possibly more than the weight loss!

This is one of those wildly variable things depending on your surgeon. I didn't have a lot of trapped gas post-op, but others have more or less. All you do is walk it off, soon as you're able. I did slow laps around my ward and it very quickly resolved. So take this one as it comes - you may not get any at all!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
