Hi! I am having surgery next week and was wondering about the liquid diet post op. Are we to add unflavored Protein Powder to our broths during this stage? I bought some Protein clear liquid (premiere and Gatorade) so I didn’t know if I should be doing that also.

You can usually add Protein powder to any liquid you’re allowed during this stage.

Have you been given your dietary requirements for post surgery yet? There are foods & liquids you should avoid during the 6 or so weeks of the restricted diet while you’re healing. Check with your surgeon’s office & your dietician about what you can & can have. There can be differences in what you’re allowed & when across surgeons & plans. Like I didn’t have a clear liquid stage just liquids.

All the best with your surgery.

Hi, You will be given a Protein count to aim for. Mine is 60 grams a day. Every surgeon has a different regime so you will need to read his pamphlet/ book to find out. Just do what ever your own surgeon advises. If your shakes and drinks don't have enough protein, then you can add extra protein powder to your other foods and drinks. Its not something that you should over worry about early on, getting your liquids in is enough for the first few days. That can seem like a full time job in itself. Good luck

I have surgery Friday and have been thinking about this same thing— can you have actual Protein Shakes on the “clear” liquid phase? I’m reading my paperwork and it seems I could.. but would love to hear what others did for the “clear” part- my second week is “full” liquids…

the one Protein Water (ie protein Gatorade) had was terrible, could barely get thru half of it. Any suggestions on clear ones that are good are appreciated.

I’m having surgery on 3/13 and just discussed this with my nutritionist. On my plan, “Clear” liquids is anything you can see through (Water, ice, broth, Gatorade zero, sugar free Jello, even diluted apple juice). After the first few days, I’m able to move up to “full” liquids like Protein Shakes, thinned yogurt, strained Soups (no bits at all). Definitely check with your provider on this because everyone seems to have different requirements 😊

Mine said the same thing. No "milky Protein drinks" until "full liquid diet" stage.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
