What are your slider foods?

Recommended Posts

I am only 2 months post surgery and I have only discovered one slider food, baby carrots. What are yours?

Is there a rhyme or reason about what makes something a slider food?

Back when I had surgery "slider foods" had a very specific meaning. They used to be generally high carb foods like pastas and potatoes, things that "slide" easily down your throats once chewed a little that were less than optimal in our plans. chips were non-obvious because they started out crunchy but became slider foods. I forget what they all were because the one's I didn't care for I never worried about and the others, once I got out of the habit I didn't remember what they were, so I've long since forgotten the specific foods. This was one of my surgeon's rules that I've long since forgotten.

My surgeon never classified vegetables as slider foods. More's the pity.

Not unlike how "truth" used to have a specific meaning but now we get to have our own.

Geez I sound like my grandmother.

And while I'm here, get off my lawn!

Good luck,

Tek

Yes, I'm no whipper snapper so I have also watched words evolve over my life. The whole "truth" thing drives me bonkers. But that is for another forum.

My dietician told me that she considers slider foods those that you can eat in larger quantities bc they just slide through your upper digestive tract and don't make you full. If carrots are the only "slider food" I get, I'll be pleased. I've not yet tried any kind of potato, grain, or "junk" food.

I sat down with a little tray of carrots and cheese that come prepackaged. I ate the cheese first, probably 2 ounces, and then started on the carrots. Before I knew it, there were only 2 left. There were probably 1/3 - 1/2 cup of carrots before. Much more than I thought I could eat 2 months post-op.

I'll be off your lawn now, Tek. 😂

"Facts!" We also get our own facts now!

"Slippery food" is by it's very definition bad! Veggies need not apply. I would never go so far as accusing someone eating veggies as doing anything near unhealthy! That's just fanciful definitions that is.

cheese is gawd's gift, so that's cool in my world. Oh, we get our own "worlds" now too!

In my book, yeah we get books too, if I can eat extra 'healthy' stuff, more's the power. I will not have anyone coming anywhere close to classifying it is bad. Jealousy is what I call that!

Good luck,

Tek

Hiya Lisa, Has your restriction kicked in yet ? I say this because I could eat a little more before my true restriction came. For a while I could only eat half as much as before. Even now I can only eat a half of a peeled apple and 30 grams of cheese or the same with carrots and hummus at one meal

Carrots are too healthy to be slider foods after all they help us and rabbits see in the dark, or did my mother lie to me ? Is this why my hair is straight despite eating all my bread crusts ?

Ha! Carrots were the first thing I officially threw up at about week 8. Ate a soft slice one day easy but the next up it came. They actually weren’t on my permitted food list for a few months - root vegetables were a no.

Slider foods are high processed, high sugar &/or high carb foods with very little nutritional value.

How many do you eat? 6 baby carrots/half cup is considered a single portion size but this is for someone on a regular diet.. If your carrots are very soft & well cooked, you possibly are digesting them quickly & can eat more but they wouldn’t be considered a slider. Are you eating them raw as a snack or with Protein as a meal? Remember eat your protein first then your vegetables if you’re able. Portion size is important for everything you eat. At 2 months I could just eat a small cauliflower floret or a green bean after I ate my protein.

Could also be the baby carrots are satisfying your craving for sweet &/or crunchy not a real hunger. Head hunger can be very powerful.

Have a chat with your dietician.

These were raw baby carrots with cheese as a snack. My dietician wants me to branch out and try more textures of food. This was my first time trying them. I had no issues and ate them again a few days later with some deli meat as a snack. Second time I only let myself eat a couple of them.

ETA: I think my restriction has kicked in, but only time will really tell. I can usually only eat around 2-2.5 ounces of food.

carrots wouldn't be considered slider foods. Slider foods are things like ice cream, popcorn, and various other junk food that you can eat a lot of, and most have a lot of empty calories to boot.

I eat baby carrots when I'm trying to ward off a potential binge. Reason being is that if I eat enough of them, they often irritate my stomach so much that the last thing I want to do is eat more. Not only do i not want to eat more carrots, but I don't want to eat ANYTHING!

carrots are very nutritious and have very few calories. They also don't go down all that easily - as in comparison to something like ice cream. So definitely not a slider food.

It is popcorn in my case. I also found out that french fries and Pasta do the same for me like you and baby carrots. I take a couple of bites and I don't want to look at or touch food again. It could be the starch but I'm not very sure.

It's also me with popcorn; I get the kind without hulls and it's like butter flavored air.

yea Pasta tends to sit in my stomach like a brick - and I can feel the effects for a long time afterward. I can handle a little of it - like 1/2 cup (100-ish ml) - but more than that and I'm miserable.

All the "junk" foods are slider foods for me. chips, candy, etc. But I don't eat them often so it's not a worry. Strangely, popcorn really fills me up when I eat it now. Before surgery I could eat tons, now I can do about 2 cups and then I know it's time to stop. I love popcorn but don't eat it often. It's nice to be able l control it now when I do.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
