Sucking on hard candy during clear liquid phase

Recommended Posts

Would these be allowed during a clear liquid diet as long as you do not chew and swallow the hard candy? After surgery, your mouth is dry, throat is sore and stomach is queasy....seems like a good option to address all issues. The only objectionable factor I foresee, might be the sugar alcohols causing more gas but one or two pieces shouldn't contribute unless a person is highly sensitive to sugar alcohols. Any experience or opinions would be appreciated.

My surgeon forbade in the strongest terms possible doing anything like this. Apparently, it's ridiculously easy to swallow by accident and then you're in for a load of not fun as they stick a grabber down your throat to grab it. His imagery, not mine.

I chose not to chance it. Many have without harm.

Good luck,

Tek

I believe it was intended to be.

When you have tens of vulnerable patients at a time, he said it happenned at least once a month.

I was scared straight. But again, others have managed it without mishap.

How averse are you to risk?

Good luck,

Tek

I take risk in business but not with my health. I will add that as far as the hard candy....I am a "sucker" not a chew-er but the remedy to the accidental swallowing is a definite deterrent!

I agree with the others. Better stay away from it. I think the risks outweigh the benefits in this case

There are alternatives. Biotene spray to moisturise your mouth (take some to the hospital) & warm drinks can be more soothing to a sore throat & tummy than cool or cold.

Oh & the sugar alcohol reaction can be much worse than just gas: diarrhoea, cramping, etc. It’s not uncommon to be more sensitive to them after surgery.

All the best with your surgery & recovery.

I used to put tiny slivers of hard cheese in my mouth and waited till it disappeared. My Keto mouth thought it was delightful

I second the biotene spray or lozenges. I am 10 days post op and these saved my mouth in the first couple days. I did ask the clinic nurse if I was allowed and she meant to ask the surgeon but never got back to me. I imagine they would have said no, but I snuck them in anyway. I only used them about 5 times within 24 hours post op though. After that, I had Water and ice so there was no need.

Wow you lost 60 lb!! That's truly a goal! Which surgery did you have did you have bypass or sleeve? I had sleeve. I know about the hair fall out I ended up getting my haircut short very short and that seemed to help

For dry mouth symptoms I use Biotene oral moisturizers in the form of gel and/or their spray. Their toothpaste and mouth wash is also great for everyday but I don't feel it gives the severe relief that is needed after events such as surgery when you are no P.O. and such. It helps greatly! Widely available and afordable.Screenshot_20230224-094959.thumb.png.16c215ea5cefe88bc607669deb351dfe.png

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
