How to get rid of horrible taste and over salvation

Recommended Posts

Since about 2 weeks after my surgery (I’m almost at the month mark now) I’ve had a horrible taste in my mouth and having to spit out so much saliva and sometimes some mucus I’ve really had a hard time with this if anyone has any tips please let me know cause it’s driving me crazy

The taste is likely ketosis. It makes your breath smell and taste bad. Nothing you can do about it as far as I know. Once you get back to a regular diet it will go away.

The extra saliva, I don't know.

Did you have sleeve or bypass? Could be acid related? Before I had surgery I had the worse GERD ever, and sometimes i would get extra salivay without the acid and my doctor said it was from the GERD. I don't know if that is your case, but worth asking about.

I constantly sip Water except for the 30 minutes before I eat or 30 minutes after I eat. However, I brush my teeth more often now. Almost every time I eat and before I start cooking. Why before I start cooking? I have a tendency to snack on the items that I'm cooking and having freshly brushed teeth makes me not want to put food in my mouth while my teeth are still minty fresh. If I can't brush my teeth, I use mouth wash to try to get rid of that terrible taste.

Yes, ketosis (fat burning) is likely causing the bad taste. Bad body odour is another side effect. It will pass when you are eating more & a more balanced diet.

I wonder if the excess saliva is the foamies??? It usually occurs if you eat too fast, too large a bite, too much or food that is too dry, coarse or fibrous. Your body produces the slimy, mucus like saliva as a protection: to ease the food into your tummy or to help bring it up (regurgitate) if it is stuck or too much.

Use lots of sauces, gravies & stock if you’re on soft foods. chicken breast can be too dry & cause problems for many. I ate a lot of minced beef dishes to begin as they were much easier to swallow & digest. Make sure you’re not drinking too close to before or after you eat (stick to that 30 mins) as that can contribute too.

Give your surgeon a call too just the be sure.

As far as taste goes, you might try using sugar-free hard candy as long as you are capable of not biting down and crunching it up and can let it melt.

I had the most loathsome taste until I started eating better foods, defo ketosis as everyone has said. I too had lots of saliva, I take anti nausea medication and that helps. Occasionally my mouth fills with saliva and I know I will vomit. I have eaten too quick, eaten something my stomach objects to, overeaten or a few time I have come a cropper with pepper and grape skins getting stuck in my tiny tummy. I don't vomit food just foamy saliva. We call this the foamies. Go back to your team and get some more info if you need it. Hugs

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
