I'm almost 2 years op post VGS. I had lost a total of 80lbs but in the last few months I have managed to gain 30lbs. I've gotten back into my old habits and I feel like a complete loser. I don't know where to go from here. I want to reach out to my doctor to help me get back on track but again I feel like I've failed and I'm embarassed. Does anyone have any advice on how to get back on track? Any help is appreciated.

Never feel embarrassed to ask your doctor questions. They are there to help. You are not a loser! I would say go back to your bariatric basics. Protein and hydration. But definitely ask your doctor and dietitians what they would suggest!

You are more than welcome in check back in with the surgeon now rather than continuing to gain. They would much rather see you now than waiting too long and reversing all the good you have done. Your dietician would also rather see you now. Sometimes a few words really can help turn things back around. Talk to some-one who is rooting for you. Kick those old and failing habits back to the curb, 😊

go back to your clinic and don't be embarrassed. Regain is unfortunately very common, so they're used to dealing with that. They can help you get back on track - and they may even put you on meds or something to help you get back on track. Better to deal with it now and not risk it starting to spiral out of control. I can guarantee that you're not the only patient they've seen for help with regain, because I've known several of them (me included!)

And don't forget that a VSG can be converted to a Bypass if all else fails.

Many of us used food as a coping mechanism. Perhaps it's time to see a therapist or behavioralist to learn some new coping mechanisms. It can make returning to and staying on plan easier to reestablish and maintain.

Good luck,

Tek

I’m a little over 2 years post surgery and have gained 20 pounds back. I just logged my calorie intake the other day to see how much I was consuming. Over 2500!!! And I also drink while I eat too. I’ll be starting the pouch reset to get my mind back to what it was after surgery. Hopefully that will help me get back on track. Hang in there. We are all human

Please don’t do a pouch reset. I’ve seen at least half a dozen bariatric dietitians explain why it’s so bad for you. You are only on fluids when you come home from surgery to help your pouch heal, not to lose weight. You’ll just be starving yourself and when you go back to solids you’ll gain. Just start tracking and make sure you’re hitting your macros and Water goals.

Yes I hope you've contacted your doctor! It's an ongoing journey, they will not judge you 💜

I’m doing it to get me back on track. A week of going through the steps isn’t going to make someone gain a bunch of weight, as long as they stick to how they’re supposed to eat when it’s over. Gotta get your mind back on track.

I feel the exact same way. I lost close to 90lbs and have managed to gain about 25 pounds since my smallest weight, which was 269. I'm feeling very embarassed and ashamed as well. My two year follow-up is with my surgeon this month and I truly have no idea how to show my face. The last time I was there, I had gained about 16lbs since my smallet weight. So this is just embarassing.

It can be so hard. Maybe start by eating a healthy Breakfast and lunch every day, and worry about dinner as you regain some of your healthy habits? That has worked for me, along with not eating lunch till I finish my big container of Crystal Light. (I’m still working on hydration after lunch…) Starting with small steps may be more manageable.

Hey. Hope you’re doing alright. I just got my revision from band to sleeve. I had the band for 13 years. Many times I lost and gained. Got super fit, got chubby, then I let it go and got fat. Lots of feeling that you’re talking about.

After all these years, the best advice I’d give myself is not get back to basics and all that stuff, it’s let go of the shame. Don’t carry that dead weight of “your feelings” and you can just pick right back up.

That’s my own advice. Just writing it down. Maybe it’ll resonate with you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
