How did you lose so much weight? How do you answer this question

With WLS being around since a whole while now and more and more people getting it I'd guess people asking questions will suspect WLS anyway. It's not a niche procedure anymore. Most people know that these procedures exist.

A former colleague from another department lost a ton of weight after having been absent for maybe two or three weeks. People are suspecting WLS, even though they've not asked her directly.

People are no fools. Most of them won't believe that story about "lifestyle changes" and "healthy diet and exercise" while conveniently not mentioning the surgery anyway. The easiest way is to say "I had surgery". People who're interested in the whole thing might want to know what kind of surgery it was but usually that's the end of it.

Most of the people I'm working with now have not seen me at my heaviest. Only two of three of them. The problem is when staff from HQ come for the monthly meetings / site visits. I try to keep a low profile during those day but still will get noticed lol.

This week we have a lot of visitors from the head office (I work in a remote site) and I've not seen some of them for quite sometime. Some even before Covid hit. I was the star of this week with everyone talking about my weight loss and all kinds of praise and encouragement. Almost everyone asked me how did I lose the weight including the big bosses from the client and the contractors.
I've only told my direct boss and the company managing director about my surgery. I took time-off to do it and told everyone else that I was going on vacation. It helped that we were still working from home while I was recovering so nobody noticed any change during that period.
I chose not to tell my coworkers because I didn't want the unsolicited advice and opinions some might have about the WLS and also the follow-up questions. I learned that from when I was on Keto and made the mistake of telling a few coworkers about it. Suddenly I would have people come over to talk to me about it or advising against it etc. It was too much. One guy in particular would come in a for a weekly update on how much weight did I lose etc.
Outside work, only my wife, my direct family and two of my closest friends know about my WLS. They have been very supportive and helped me throughout.
I've been telling people that I was on Keto, then started a low-carb diet and exercising. I even have a photo of me on my maintain bike to prove it [emoji23]. I would love to hear how did you respond to such questions / remarks?

I just got , so I just told them the same way I put it on, but the opposite .They never ask why I was fat...

If I didn’t want others blabbing my sleeve surgery I got June 21, 2023 to other people they trust with their secrets… I better just keep quiet.
My closest best friend of 15yrs knows and my fiancé. That’s all….. I feel bad cause I haven’t even told my parents or sister..yet. I told everyone including my coworkers I had Hiatal Hernia repair (that covers why I was in the hospital and why I was off).
I am getting married Sept 22, 2023. I just tell coworkers I’m on some crazy awesome bridal diet. Lol … of course they ask “what type of diet”. I just say low calorie, low sugar, low fat, smaller portions, no fast food and walking.
I’m not completely lying …right? Lol

But in a few months I do plan to tell my parents and sister. The guilt is killing me! Lol :)

I don't plan on telling anyone but I know someone is going to remark about my lack of weight. I plan on just giving them a somber look , and saying " I had to have stomach surgery and they ended up removing part of my stomach" .I'm hoping they think it's a serious enough condition to not ask any questions.

I've been very open about my surgery, mainly because I live in a very rural area where gossip reigns supreme. There are a few people I know who have had the surgery and didn't tell many people, so now rumor has it they lost weight on the 'meth diet'. I don't want that, or any other controversy so I'm just being an open book.

This is a big part of it for me, too: I am open about how I lost the weight because I too deal with a lot of busybodies and didn't want them starting the narrative that I had an eating disorder or was on drugs, because that is absolutely what they would do.

I tend to just say "eating less and moving more". It's factually correct and avoids any judgements or follow-up questions I might get if I went into more detail regarding surgery or my specific diet & exercise routine.

My favorite response also......"Eat less, move around more"

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
