Advanced Recovery shakes

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been on the per-op liquid diet and had to drink the Nestle Advanced Recovery shakes right before? I am 5 days before my surgery and had to start these and they are so nasty tasting that they make me gag and I have almost thrown them up 4 times. Has anyone figured a work around for this or a way to make them taste better?Screenshot_20230210-030925_Chrome.jpg

There are plenty of other Protein Shakes out there that may be better tasting.

Id match the nutritional info and then ask your team if substitutions are ok. Did they insist on these drinks and no others?

I prefer the Premier Protein shakes for best flavor.

Wow, look how expensive it is! Is your surgeon or medical team selling this to you?

Based on what the Nestle website claims this stuff may be marginally better than OTC drinks but ultimately may help prepare and recover from surgery. For quite a bit more coin. And quite a bit of icky, sicky.

Tell your surgeon you want to change to another drink and they'll probably have no issue. If it is a problem, then you have three options:

  1. Suck it up and drink it;
  2. Get another surgeon;
  3. Keep letting your surgeon think you are drinking it while drinking something that isn't torture. The surgeon won't be able to tell;

This sort of thing triggers me, I'm sorry if I over reacted. Stuff like this feels like a punishment.

Good luck,

Tek

Very odd that you HAVE to drink these. Did they sell them to you? I just saw that they're almost 300cals per bottle. That's way too high for a Protein Drink in my opinion. The Protein Drinks I have are 170cals & taste amazing (Fairlife brand)

I'd sugest asking them to switch to something else especially since it tastes horrible. That's really frustrating

Yeah I have been drinking plenty of other shakes the rest of the time. They didn't sell them. They actually gave them to me. Just one of the worst tasting things I have ever tried to drink.

Tried to add peppermint extract to mask the flavor but all it did was make me feel like I was drinking toothpaste and numb my lips lol.

I would ask your dr if you can use something else but if they insist on this product, try putting flavorings in it. You could add Sugar Free Chocolate Syrup or frozen fruit and put it in a blender with ice, unless youre on a liquid preop diet.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
