Fibromyalgia and bariatric surgery

Recommended Posts

I have fibromyalgia (officially diagnosed 12/22) and deal with pain daily. I'm not on any of the medications they have available and trying to learn my body, what it's capable of, and living with it. Has anyone had either the sleeve or bypass as well as fibromyalgia? How has the surgery affected your fibro symptoms? Thanks!

Hello Lindsay. I have had Fibromyalgia so many years and before my sleeve, I took 8 co-codamol a day and one , 10 mg Amiltriptyline for it. Now I can exercise so much more, I find I need much less pain meds. I just take 2 at night and the amiltryptaline, one hour before bed. I have had one spell whilst sleeved that made me take more pain meds. I still have all the other fibro symptoms to deal with but if I can get some sleep then I can cope.

I have fibro. I haven't had a flare (that I'm aware of), since my surgery. I know that correlation doesn't equal causation, so it's hard to say if they're related.

I sure hope the surgery helps with fibro, at least some. In my mind, getting the weight off will give my body one less thing to be angry at me for.

I was diagnosed with fibro in 2012 and I had VSG 12/20/2022. So far I’ve lost 62lbs (since starting my program) and I haven’t had much of a change in my fibro symptoms even with cymbalta and lyrica, but I’m still hopeful it will change some as I lose more.

Hi! I was sleeved on the 12 of January. I have fibromyalgia. Before my surgery I was taking seamoss and collagen which helped with my pain. It's only been 2 weeks post op and seem ok. Can't wait for what the future has in store.

Hi Lindsey, I have lupus and fibromyalgia. I just did a revision from Lapband to gastric bypass a few weeks ago. I actually am doing a lot better with my pain control. I take 50mg of amitriptyline at bedtime for it. I actually get more sleep now since I did the revision and it helps my symptoms.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
