Is it common for doctors to use medical glue to close the incisions? I told them I was allergic to it, they put an allergy tag on me, yet they still used the glue and now I have the hives and a rash.

My doc used it. It is just now starting to flake off now 8 days post surgery.

Every surgeon has their own preferences, mine used steri strips (butterfly stitches) and some regular stitches on the inside.

BUT! I would say it would irritate me to have told them you were allergic and they still used it causing a reaction.

I definitely would have thrown a little fit about that. Who wants to be extra miserable on top of already healing from a surgery.

Hope you feel better soon!

yes. Especially for small incisions like you have with WLS. I didn't find out I was allergic to it (it was either that, or surgical tape) until my second skin removal surgery. Not sure if they used a different tape or glue with that one, or if it just took awhile for my body to build up a resistance to it. It was too early to remove the tape, so the surgeon put me on prednisone for ten days (which lowers your immunity), at which time it was safe to remove the tape.

as someone else said, your surgeon or PCP can put you on benadryl to deal with the itching, too.

Yes, I had the glue, as well. But since you're allergic, I'm sure something else could have been done. I would load up on Benadryl and call their office complaining about it. It's not cool to ignore a patient's allergies.

Unfortunately Benadryl didn’t work, in fact the hives on my left side spread to my right side. I have a follow up today so I will see if I can get a cortisone shot or cream.

oooo yea - that looks bad. That's kind of how I was after my plastic surgery (and I discovered I was allergic to the glue or tape they used). They had me on prednisone tablets for 10 days, which does the same thing as the cortisone shot will - depresses your immune system so it won't react to allergens. Should do the trick...

I still have glue on my insicions. I'm 2 weeks post op. When does it fall?

I had some still at 6 weeks (belly button) but the others were coming off at 4 weeks, since that is when I started to wear regular clothes and they would rub. Let them come off naturally, I picked one and it took another 3 weeks for the redness to go away.

Oh wow that really looks like it hurts. Have you thought about going to Urgent Care or something? They could probably prescribe you steroids if that's something you're able to take.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
