Unsuccessful revision from sleeve to bypass due to hernia mesh

Recommended Posts

I went in for surgery on Thursday the 29th to convert my sleeve to a gastric bypass due to weight loss failure. When I woke up from anesthesia I got the bad news that my surgeon was unable to do the surgery safely. When he got in my belly he found all of the mesh from my hernia surgeries as well as a new recurring hernia I didn't know I had. Apparently I have adhesions of the mesh to my bowel. He says he can repair it and isn't giving up on me but we need a plan B. I cried the entire day I was so upset. Waking up to pain and incisions only to discover the surgery didn't happen after so much preparation for that day I was completely overwhelmed with a feeling of grief. I'm really hoping he is able to fix my hernias and mesh successfully so he can complete the conversion to bypass. Has anyone else gone in for surgery and had the surgeon not be able to perform the surgery? I'm still feeling bummed and I don't really know exactly what's next until I speak to my surgeon again and my new incisions completely heal. Happy New Year :(

I am sorry you had to go through this. Thats tough. We gear ourselves up to go ahead with surgery and have to do it all again in the future. I hope you heal quickly without too much pain. Hugs x

Yes, it was when my band came out. It wouldn't have been able to do band removal and MGB in one session. I was devastated as well.

the only thing I had close to that was when I went in for my second plastic surgery. It was in Chicago, so we drove the two hours down there and stayed in a hotel overnight. Got to the hospital around 6:00 am. Got all prepped, IV started, even talked to the anesthesiologist about 20 minutes before the surgery was supposed to start. The surgeon got in there late - like an hour late - turned out he'd broken his wrist on the way to the hospital, so they had to reschedule the surgery! (he said one of his residents could do it if I wanted to stay, but I declined - after forking over all that $$, I wanted the surgeon to do it). Luckily, the hotel let me cancel the rest of my stay (two more nights), given the circumstance...

I'm looking forward to finding out what Plan B is and hoping he can really fix up the hernia issue so I can have the bypass and as well be done with constant recurring hernias and get this weight off. I didn't even know I had another hernia because I just had a major hernia surgery a couple of years ago and everything was all fixed up. Adhesions can't be prevented I guess :(

I am so sorry to hear that. I can only imagine what a letdown that must’ve been. Wishing you a speedy recovery and a swift new surgery date with an awesome plan to tackle all of your issues.

Hi LeighlonLove, I am less than 2 weeks away from getting a sleeve to bypass revision due to severe GERD. However, I had a paraesophageal hernia repair done in 2018 and my new surgeon just saw the surgical notes. Apparently, my first surgeon who did the hernia repair used lots of mesh and also did a Nissan fundoplication which is not usually done with a sleeve. I now have a hiatal hernia very close to that same location and she is concerned that she won't be able to fix it because it's in a tight location (GI junction) and there is very little tissue to work with. She said a mesh repair is like using super glue so she doesn't want to to try and remove it. Her fear is leaks which would be a big problem. She has agreed to do the revision to bypass with the hope that it will take care of some of this awful GERD but not all, unfortunately.

Did you and your surgeon come up with a plan B? If so, I'd love to know what was decided. Best of luck with your next step!

Penny

I have a recurring hernia that came as a result of my gallbladder surgery years ago. I have had 3 hernia surgeries to date and part of Plan B is a 4th. I'm having that on 3/23 and then scheduling the revision to bypass for about 3-4 months after the Hernia repair so I'm all healed up. I've been feeling really down about this so I'm glad to be back on the path to resolution :) Wishing you the best as well.

Im very new to forum and your post was one of the first I read as prepare for my surgery on 3/27. My nerves are all over the place and I had not even thought of the possibility of my surgery not being able to be done because complications. Ive had several surgeries and never thought about the possibility of it being problems. Im so sorry to hear of your cancellation but so happy that your plan B is on the way. im one day one of my liver reduction diet and praying that when I wake up tomorrow will be just a little easier : )

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
