Sudden onset of painful nausea

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I had my gastric bypass Dec 21st and I've been doing really well up until 2 and a half days ago when I started to experience this painful nausea that would kind of come and go on and off since then.

I had to take my pain meds from the hospital to actually sleep the last 2 nights because it was so awful. I did note that the day it started I did try a new good and a very small amount but it was Tomato based Soup and thought maybe I royally pissed my stomach /intestines off. I also got my period which made me feel like extra crap as well.

Tonight I've been up trying to walk and settle it as I could not sleep and vomited but nothing came up just a bit of foam. It did alleviate the feeling a little but my goodness this feels awful

I did talk to my surgeon and he did thing it might be related to the new food I introduced, had anyone else had this issue?

Yes we have. Its called the foamies. Tomato may be a little acidic for your new tummy. Or its just not ready to take it yet. Go back a stage for a day or two until your tummy settles and then try a milder Soup, like cream of chicken or just broth. I hosted a party last night and ate too quickly because I was cooking between courses and got the nausea. I went to the loo and quickly got rid of the foam, no one noticed, not even my husband.

tomatoes have a lot of acid in them - so I can see that upsetting your stomach for sure. I still have trouble eating acidic foods sometimes (at 7.5 years out)

Tomatoes are definitely an issue for many people. You said the day it started you had tomatoes Soup but you had this issue two nights. Did you have the soup the second day as well? Or anything else new?? If not I’m thinking it’s unlikely that it’s food related and maybe you should make another call to update the doctor that you had it what I’m guessing was well over 24 hours after you ate the new food. I never had the foamies but I do not think they last that long. Perhaps others can chime in on that. How are you feeling now?

I am definitely doing that for a few days. Learning the hard way is always fun. I have plenty of broth and my order from here just arrived with cream of chicken Soup but I think I'll wait a couple days. Feeling a lot better today though, nausea has gone with the pain too.

Thanks all for your input. Not the way I wanted to ring in the new year but sometimes that's how it is.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
