Freaking Out A Little (Pre-Op Diet Worries)

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I'm scheduled for Gastric Sleeve surgery on 12/28/22. I am reading all these threads where people are stating that they are on pre-op diets/liquid diets for 2 weeks or so. Neither my surgeon or nutriotionist said anything about this. The only instruction I received was Clear Liquids only the day before surgery. They didn't even say it has to be sugar free.

After reading through a whole heck of a lot of pre-op threads, I'm kind of freaking out & feeling like I'm doing something wrong or jeopardizing my surgery in some way.

Am I wrong here? Should I postpone? Did anyone else not have to do a pre-op diet?

Not everyone has to do the pre op diet. It varies greatly between doctor and amongst patients. I personally had a low carb type diet for a week and just the normal liquid thing the day before. The purpose of the diet is to shrink your liver so that it’s not in the way during surgery. If your doctor doesn’t require it then they don’t think you need it. Count your blessings. For many people the preop diet is the hardest part.

I'm only required to do a liquid diet for 48 hours prior

I never was on a liquid diet. I was able to eat real food until 6:00pm the night before. After surgery, for dinner I had pureed stuff, I don't remember exactly what it was. Puree went for 6 weeks, then real food again.

Different strokes for different surgeons, as usual.

Good luck,

Tek

Thank you guys.

I know all surgeons have different protocols, and I wouldn't think he'd steer me wrong, but I guess it's the nerves talking.

I appreciate the feedback.

Merry Christmas!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
