Pre-op House Prep

Recommended Posts

What did you all do to get your house ready for your recovery? I am making sure the basic things are done, like laundry, changing bed linens, etc. My surgery is on the 27th and I am finding myself overwhelmed with Christmas and surgery prep, so any suggestions are very welcome!

What other things did you do that you think were helpful? What things do you wish you had done.

I slept in a recliner for the first few days out of the hospital, so I made sure I had clean blankets for that and a few pillows as needed. I also had my laptop arranged so that I wouldn't have to stretch to reach it for when I wanted to watch a movie/show when not napping.

I was stocked up with the recommended food items for the immediate post op stage.

Beyond that, I'm lucky because I didn't have much house prep to do. My husband wanted me to relax after work so I wouldn't be stressed about the surgery. Between him and my 16 year old daughter, they took care of household upkeep.

Good luck on your surgery!

I made a few freezer meals so my family would have easy, already made dinners so none of us had to cook. I did laundry, linens, and some regular tidying up; grocery shopped, paid the bills, balanced the checkbook, that kind of stuff. I wanted to have enough mental space that I wouldn't feel like I "needed" to do things. My husband was really helpful and managed all of the day to day stuff, the kids, and me while I was down.

If is great that you are getting as much ready ahead as you can but also if you have someone who can pop by and tidy a few things while you recover it may be a good idea to call in that favor (if you have someone at home who can do it. Even better). It drove me crazy just to sit and look at all the things that needed to be done and not just get up and do them for days.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
