Stricture at the pouch and duodenum? Anyone?

Are you nauseous all day or just when you eat and drink? It was first when I was eating harder foods but now it’s starting to be after drinking too. I just don’t understand why it’s getting worse. I hope you find some relief too.

I'm nauseous all day.

I'm sorry Kcuster83, I meant an upper GI series barium swallow. Since my surgeon is out, they can't do the endoscopy. I'm so frustrated. Thanks for replying, did you have a stricture?

Not exactly the same thing since I have yet to undergo surgery, but my upper GI "suggested" that my stomach mucosa is bulging a little into my duodenum. Based on that, I am thinking they might at least be able to get some idea from an upper GI study.

Thanks for the info. I hope we can figure this out. Appreciate it.

Hi greenttealael-

i think my stricture would be at where the intestine and stomach go together (if I have one) because I can swallow ok. But the food seems to sit there forever. Monday I tried to eat more regular food and I was nauseous again in about 20 minutes and when I woke up the next day I was nauseous all day. I spent the afternoon dry heaving into a trash can because nothing comes up. If I stick to mushy the nausea passes in a couple hours. I used to be able to drink fine. Now even Water is making me nauseous. Where was your structure?

glad you got it fixed! Thanks for the reply.

laura

I had a classic anastomotic stenosis and it was resolved with one dilation during the diagnostic endoscopy.
I could eat just fine but very, very quickly (within minutes) everything came back up, no retching necessary and absolutely nothing but Clear Liquids stayed down. Of course everyone is different and symptoms of strictures vary.

I had two strictures (I had RNY). At first, I felt like I had GERD after I ate anything - which seemed weird to me since GERD is fairly unusual after an RNY. A few days later, I'd get very nauseated every time I ate anything. I don't know about DS, but they can definitely see strictures if you've had an RNY. They do an upper endoscopy and can stretch it out while they're in there.

if you get to the point where you can't even keep fluids down, go to the ER. People can live without food for awhile, but not fluids.

I’m learning new everyday. I assumed if food got past the esophagus and into the stomach, it wouldn’t come back up given the size of the stoma. Sounds like yours would. Wow! So glad you got that fixed so easily. I hear a lot of people get nausea too. When I’ve been trying to vomit, I only get a lot of saliva and mucus up. Maybe that is what they refer to as the foamies. 😂

Hi catwoman - do you remember the period of time when this started to when you could no longer keep down food? I’ve been going through this for a month.

can't remember - maybe 2 or 3 weeks? (I had my strictures at four weeks out and eight weeks out - so that was over seven years ago - my memory of it all is a bit fuzzy...but I do remember it took awhile for it to come on. Not as long the second time, though, since I realized what was going on much quicker since I knew the symptoms...)

Thanks for the info. Yours was an anostomotic stricture at the duodenum too? I know some people get it at the stoma. I appreciate your responses. Helps me in understanding how to talk to the surgeon next week.

I’m sorry u are having such horrible symptoms. Are you able to have bowel movements? Were you regular before the symptoms started?

Hi KymmieDS-

yes, I have had pretty normal bowel movements since this started except my atoll can get a little hard sometimes so I take a stool softener. I have one at least every 2 days and sometimes everyday.

Hi Catwoman7-

Weird question for you but do you remember if you had a lot of burping with the stricture? I burp all the time after I drink and eat. It often clears the nausea a bit but was wondering if you had that. Thank you again for all your responses.

I can't remember - I might have. I just remember the GERD-type feeling and the nausea. I might have had burping - but it's been so long my memory has faded a bit...

Is the GERD feeling burning or regurgitation?

burning, "bubbling" feeling in my stomach, acid-y feeling stomach. Although on top of the GERD, I felt nauseated after eating, too. At first after a few things - and as it progressed, I couldn't keep food down at all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
