Pregnancy like symptoms

Recommended Posts

Curious if anyone else has experienced something like this. I’m about a month out from surgery and I’m having a decent amount of nausea and food aversions. It feels VERY similar to when I was pregnant and in the first trimester. I know hormones get weird post surgery and am wondering if it can cause these types symptoms. I don’t believe it’s any of the other causes of nausea because I have no other symptoms. No sweating or anxiety with dumping. No vomiting or heaviness that go with a stricture. No foamies or similar from eating too fast/too much. I have let my doctor know and they said to take more omeprazole, which has helped some. The food aversion may be somewhat to my developed intolerances but not sure.

Some do experience random bouts of nausea. Your tummy is still sensitive & can be fussy & decide it doesn’t like certain foods for a little while. It can even say no way to something today & tomorrow it’s fine. So it could be just that. Your sense of smell & taste also become more sensitive for a couple of months. And yes you can develop temporary intolerances to things like lactose & artificial sweeteners that are alcohol sugars (those that end in ‘ol’) .

Yes, your hormones do go haywire too causing your menstrual cycle & accompanying PMT symptoms to be strange because of the estrogen that is released from your fat as you lose weight. It can make you more fertile too. Some doctors recommend doubling up on contraceptives. So maybe take a pregnancy test to be sure.

I remember feeling like I was pregnant too. Laughable when you are in your 60's. There are foods that I can not tolerate even now, 1 year out. Most fish and especially salmon seems too greasy or smelly now and it was my go to food before surgery. The smell of cooking broccoli or cauliflower makes me heave. Any meat fat would have been the first mouthful before surgery. Now the winter birds are enjoying these tasty treats.

One thing that I cry over is I have lost my tolerance for spicy food. I feel like a child again, starting back at the beginning with mild spicing. Even mild tinned chilli seemed too hot this week.

Yep, I had the smell aversions after surgery, too. The first time I ate beef - it smelled disgusting while it was cooking. It tasted good, so I was able to eat it. But the smell was awful.

For a few weeks, I was super-sensitive to perfumy smells. Scented candles and incense were the bane of my existence. I'm still a little sensitive to perfumes, but it's gotten a LOT better.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
