Thermomix?

Recommended Posts

I’m keen to treat myself to a thermomix for Christmas however, I just wanted to know if many people use this or would it be a waste?

I want to reply, I've actually tried more than once. More than thrice. It just ends up being negative. But, since I hate seeing threads get no response, here I am trying again...

Have you used similar, far less expensive all-in-ones such as Instant Pot? If not, for 1/10 the price of Thermomix you can see if you will use such a product enough to justify a $2,000 price. Once you're sure it's your money. Do your research.

I've opted not to get into the problems with MLMs. My opinion is not good and I work in the industry. This is where past response attempts went off the rails.

Good luck,

Tek

I think thermomixers could be an interesting addition to the kitchen & can see how you would be tempted. My sisters-in-law were early adopters & raved about them. One even upgraded to the newer model. But they haven’t used them in years. Like the bread maker, juicer, etc. they’ve been regulated to a cupboard. Lol!

Lots of people seem to love their instapot & as @The Greater Fool suggested, it’s less expensive & maybe a better option (especially if you have a cupboard brimming with unused appliances like I do). But if someone is gifting it too go for it. Ha!

PS - Many years ago I got a food processor for Christmas. Used it twice I think - cleaning was a pain - so into the cupboard it went. Dragged it out (& dusted it off) two years ago to make some hummus. First there was a burning smell then smoke. Unplugged it & tossed it outside. It ended up in the bin. No hummus that day. 😁

It's really expensive, so you want to be doubly sure you'd get a lot of use out of it. And that's really an individual thing. I use my instant pot pretty frequently, but some people really don't use theirs at all. I rarely use my air fryer - but some people use theirs almost every day (fortunately, mine was only like $60). Like Arabesque, I also have a small appliance "graveyard" in my basement - which I maybe use once or twice a year, if at all - like my food processor, ice cream freezer, and rice cooker. The first two were kind of pricey - but no where near $2000. Again, it really comes down to how much use you'd get out of it.

Never heard of this device, so had to Google it. Price is an individual thing and only you know how well this would fit in your budget. The thing that gave me pause was the nature of the device. It's supposedly an "all-in-one" machine, but in my experience things that make claims like that are about like "one-size-fits-all" clothing. I think a more appropriate description would be "one-size-fits-none".

My thinking is that I can't imagine this will do as good a job with most cooking tasks as a dedicated tool that was designed for each purpose. If I want to slow cook, I have tools for that. If I want to sous vide, I already have that covered. Weighing, whipping or emulsifying? Covered. Same with sauteing, browning, caramelizing, steaming, etc.

There are appliances I use almost daily like a mixer, and others like my sous vide cooker I only use a few times a year. Unfortunately there are others that, like @Arabesque and @catwoman7 have been relegated to my small kitchen appliance graveyard. (Breadmaker, I'm looking at you!)

Ultimately only you can decide if this is worth it to you, but it might be worth pondering what you'd actually be getting here over what you already have.
