I'm 11 days post op and I'm struggling to get more than 250 calories a day of that I'm getting about 15 grams of Protein. At 9 days post op, I was allowed to start a full liquid diet and I finally tried today a teaspoon of mushroom bisque, stayed down but now I'm trying to do a shake and my stomach is just gurgling. My nutrition gave me a recipe for protein Popsicles, so making them now.
Has anyone had any problems with liquid intake after surgery.

Protein no not really... Water is still a struggle at nearly 8 months post op. For Protein Shakes i bought those little 1 ounce cups and i would drink it that way. 1 ounce at a time throughout the day. It helped a ton.

I didn’t get all my Protein in either in those first couple of weeks. You’re healing, not hungry or interested in eating. My surgeon was ok as long as I was making an effort & was getting in a little more every couple of days. Same with fluids. You’ll notice some days are easier than others & that’s fine too. You’ll get there. Just slowly sip on those Protein Shakes, Soups, etc, all day. They count as fluids so double win. Try protein waters too.

I am 6 weeks post surgery. I swear by fairlite Protein Drinks. 30g Protein or Muscle milk has a 40g. I plan to drink them for the whole year. I set a 15 minute timer on my phone and drank 1 oz Water. Found room temperature was best not cold. I found sugarless skittles flavoring for water. Green apple and grape are great. I drank my Protein Drink 1 ounce an hour.

We have had our tummies made into a small tube. After surgery the tube will be very swollen. It's very difficult to drink for most of us. The sooner you can hit your liquid goals the better you will feel. Just keep drinking and try for more every day. It seems like a day's work to keep on top of it in the beginning but it's worth the effort. Try hot cold and frozen drinks.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
