Transman Gastric Bypass-Can I Take My Shot Before Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hey I’m a transman wondering if I should take my t shot a week before surgery. Will it affect anything?

Probably worth checking with your surgeon. If you disclosed the fact the fact that you’re on t when you had your consultation I imagine they would have flagged it hen if it was an issue, but better safe than sorry! When I did my pre surgery assessments they asked again and again if I was on any other medications. Have they asked you the same? If not, just call them. Definitely worth asking!

Please check with your surgeon. I'm not trans but I have a hormone disorder & had to stop a hormone based birth control & Spironolactone. Granted mine focus on the opposite hormone but you never know if it applies to your shot as well!

Hello, I agree with everyone else. Ask your surgeon, hold nothing back from the person cutting you open. You don't want any unnecessary risks.

Good luck!

Definitely bring it up to them, but I'd recommend givng them very specific information about what your shots entail - what hormones, in what amounts, etc. I mention this because sometimes doctors don't always know specifics about other specialties or specific medical needs.

I know my practice had us stop birth control for a month before, I think, but that's a much different set of hormones than I imagine you are dealing with, with known implications for potential clotting risks. But, better to be very specific and insistent to make sure you are safe!! Good luck. 🙂

For what it's worth, I self administer testosterone IM every other week.

My bariatric team had a blanket statement that patients should not get any shots 2 weeks before or after surgery. I assume this is due to the increased risk of blood clots. I specifically asked about the T shot and they told me it was fine to continue.

I agree you should ask your team though, because every doctor is different. It would suck to be told you have to reschedule the surgery because of something dumb like this.

I asked a relative who is a surgeon (came over to visit). He says no testosterone 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after. It thickens blood and may risk blood clots. Good to ask your team instead though.

Didn't see your reply that you already checked your team. Good good. I guess different surgeons have different criteria.

Thanks so much for letting me know now I don’t know if I should skip this week and ask my endocrinologist about it as well.

I asked my surgeon today and they said it’s totally fine to keep up with my shots.

My son is an CRNA and I would deff disclose that in the pre op before they put you to sleep........ just to be on the safe side.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
